BioAlfonso Gomez-Lobo, born in Chile in 1940, has taught at Georgetown since 1977. He studied at the Catholic University of Valparaiso, Chile, the University of Athens, Greece, and three German universities: Tübingen, Munich and Heidelberg. While at Munich, he completed in 1966 his Ph. D. in Philosophy, Classics and Ancient History magna cum laude. He is the recipient of several awards including research fellowships from the German Academic Exchange Service, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation.
Dr. Gomez-Lobo has taught in Valparaiso, Santiago, Puerto Rico, and Penn State before coming to Georgetown where he also directed the Greece program from 1982 until 1997. He has lectured extensively in Europe and the Americas. Dr. Gomez-Lobo has specialized in Greek philosophy, Greek historiography early Christian thought, history of ethics and contemporary natural law theory. His publications include a Spanish translation of selected works of G. Frege and numerous articles on Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato and Aristotle. His edition of Parmenides in Greek with Spanish translation and full commentary appeared in Buenos Aires in 1985 (second edition Santiago . His book, The Foundations of Socratic Ethics, has been published in Spanish, English, and French. His book Morality and the Human Goods appeared in 2002. Dr. Gomez-Lobo is currently the Ryan Family Professor of Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy at Georgetown University.He is also a member of the US President's Council on Bioethics and of the Pontifical Academy for Life of the Vatican.
