Italy's foreign minister, Franco Frattini on a visit to Libya

Italy's foreign minister, Franco Frattini arrived in Tripoli Friday in the first visit by a member of the Italian government since the overthrow over a month ago of former Libyan leader Muammar Al Qathafi after a conflict that began in mid-February and is still ongoing.

On arrival at Maitiga Airport close to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, Frattini said: "It's nice to come back to a liberated Tripoli."

The Italian minister is scheduled to meet with the chairman of the National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, interim prime minister Mahmoud Jibril, other Libyan leaders, as well as the bishop of Tripoli, Benghazi-born Bishop of the Roman Catholic bishop of Tripoli, Mons. Giovanni Martinelli whose parents were Italian.

Fratiini, the latest in a string of high-profile dignitaries to travel to Libya after the NTC forces seized Tripoli and forced Al Qathafi into hiding, said that his country was ready to unfreeze €2.5 billion in frozen Libyan assets.

The Italian minister, whose visit follows that of the British, French and Turkish leaders, and coincides with the visit of four US Republican senators, said that Italy has authorisation to release the money as requested for urgent projects to help the new rulers of Libya rebuild the country.

The Italian military is also in Libya to transport 25 injured Libyans to hospitals in Rome following Mahmoud Jibril's request for Italy to treat 100 of Libya's wounded in Italy.

Frattini told the injured Libyans: "Italy welcomes you in friendship. You will have all the care you need".
