Meet the Senior Bakers

Kimberly Garity is a Los Angeles native pursuing a major in Psychology and a minor in Art History. At Georgetown, Kimberly has been involved with the GUROP student research program, working in both the Cultural Psychology Lab and the Linguistics Department to research cross-cultural views of emotions and gender differences in social interactions. In addition to broadening her academic interests, Kimberly also teaches English at Shaw Center City Public Charter School and leads her fellow Irish Hoyas as the Co-President of the GU Irish American Society and the lead choreographer of the GU Irish Dance Team, which performs at many on-campus events such as Relay for Life and Georgetown Day. Outside of Georgetown, Kimberly enjoys frequent trips to D.C.’s many art galleries and last fall followed her love of Renaissance art to Florence to study at Georgetown’s Villa Le Balze. Professionally, Kimberly plans to take her psychology background into the world of marketing and entertainment media. Both her experiences last summer interning at Disney-ABC Television Group and this past summer at Hulu have given her great exposure to consumer research, marketing strategy and the changing dynamics of broadcast and online entertainment, areas she hopes to pursue after graduation. Kimberly co-chairs the Baker Scholars program for 2011-2012.

Emma Green, hailing from Brentwood, Tennessee, is a Government major with a minor in Arabic. She is also a Georgetown Carroll Fellow and minor candidate in Georgetown’s Social and Political Thought program. A Gold Award Girl Scout, Emma has been a volunteer at the national level of Girl Scouts of the USA for two years. Ever a lover of history and books, she serves as the librarian and historian of The Philodemic Society, Georgetown’s longest-standing student group and one of the oldest literary debate societies in the country. This summer, Emma took a crash course in Georgetown history as an intern in Lauinger Library’s Special Collections, learning about archival work and putting together an exhibit on the history of student life at Georgetown. Her archival internship built on her experience as a Georgetown University Raines Fellow in the summer of 2010, for which she spent 12 weeks in Europe and Israel living with and studying a group of nuns who contributed to the Church’s doctrine on interreligious dialogue. This fall and spring, Emma will be completing her senior honors thesis in political theory, writing on the question of the role of faith in public life. She chairs the Baker Scholars Fall Trip Committee and co-chairs the D.C. Difference community service committee.

Shamecca Harris, of Harlem, New York City, is pursuing an English major and Sociology minor. A self-prescribed creative thinker, Shamecca has a vested interest in creative industries, primarily fashion, media and entertainment. She has developed these interests in a variety of capacities in her time on the hilltop. This past summer, she served as a Store Operations and Training Intern at Polo Ralph Lauren. Prior to that she worked as an Online Editorial Intern for Viacom | MTV Networks. At Georgetown, she is a Vice President of External Marketing for the Georgetown Aspiring Minority Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs (GAMBLE) and Co-Founder of the Georgetown University Fashion Club. An avid writer, Shamecca has previously worked as a Post-Production intern at Broadway Video in New York City and a contributing writer to the style blog, Collegefashion.net. She is currently an Advertising Sales Operations Intern at BET International | BET Networks. After graduation, Shamecca intends to pursue a career in digital media research, sales and business development. Shamecca serves as Co-Chair of the Baker Scholars Marketing, Communications and Recruiting Committee.

Nathan (Nate) Hochstetler. After returning from study abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nate went to work at Irish Dreamtime Productions in the summer as a productions intern under the Vice President of Producing. Between brainstorming ideas for new game shows for the Game Show Network and analyzing the script and shooting locations for Pierce Brosnan’s next film, Nate had a diverse work experience in Hollywood. This fall, Nate will begin his marketing internship at Bourgeon Magazine where he will be in charge of the new social marketing campaign, and will also continue to work for The Corp as a Manager. He is currently doing the English Honors program, serving as a teacher’s assistant in the English Department and is enrolled in a graduate English course this fall. Nate serves as co-chair of the Baker Scholars program.

Rui Huang is pursuing a major in Political Economy with minors in Mathematics and Psychology. Born and raised in China, she aspires to combine experience in finance with her passion in international development. Rui spent the past summer interning at China Corporate Finance team for Bank of America Merrill Lynch's investment banking division in Hong Kong. She had working experience with non-profit financial institution and the public sector by interning for Calvert Foundation and the Economic Research Institute of Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the government agency that formulates policies for economics and social development in China. Rui continues to be involved in developmental field by serving as site volunteer and communication officer for Dream Corps International, a non-profit organization aimed at promoting education equity and rural development in China, and organizing conferences and fundraising events for UNICEF Georgetown. On campus, Rui was an International Pre-orientation Ambassador, a staff photographer for The Hoya and a case writer for the Business Strategy Challenge for Hilltop Consultants. In addition to the Baker Scholar Program, Rui has explored her business interests through the Bridge Program at Tuck School of Business. In her free time, Rui enjoys traveling, photography and Chinese calligraphy. Rui serves as co-chair of the Baker Scholars New York Trip Committee and of the Baker Difference community service committee.

Eliza Johnson is pursuing a major in Psychology and a minor in Economics, topics she chose to fulfill her interest in Behavioral Finance. Last spring, she was accepted into the Honors Psychology program, and is now writing a thesis on the costs and benefits of being envied, and its behavioral implications. Eliza spent last summer as an intern in Deutsche Bank’s PWM Strategy Group. Prior to that, she spent two years working full time as a researcher in Georgetown’s Center on Health and Education. Before coming to Georgetown, Eliza spent two years living and working in post-tsunami Southern Thailand. She is also a member of Georgetown University Student Investment Fund and Georgetown’s Equestrian team, and in her free time she enjoys swimming when the weather is warm and skiing when it’s cold. Eliza serves as the Co-Chair of the Baker Scholars New York Trip Committee.

Peter Nulsen loves tough puzzles that demand kinetic energy. Raised in America’s mighty Midwest Peter seeks opportunities to integrate progressive roots with the world’s great challenges. He spent summer 2011 proving charity is cool in Shanghai, China, co-leading the social market launch strategy for American sunglasses company BluBlocker. BluBlocker China social venture revenue restored vision to more than 100 Shanghainese cataract blind. Peter also brings experience leading Georgetown Energy (GE), a renewable energy action team he co-founded in fall 2010. GE is executing the largest student-funded solar energy project in the world – on Georgetown University-owned townhouses. GE’s student-team works to prove renewable energy “feasible for and useful to all peoples of the world.” Peter learned most about business during two summers as an analyst with CTC Electric, an upstart solar firm based in Connecticut. At CTC he watched a business rise from PowerPoint slides to mounted solar panels. In his future, Peter hopes to uncover ideas that help countries grow more sustainably. Peter enjoys adventures in nature, and savors days spent canoeing across Minnesota’s Boundary Water wilderness. He is deeply inspired by Confucius, and will define any success by connecting his work with his passions and values. Pete is studying political economy and co-chairs the Baker Scholars Marketing, Communications and Recruiting Committee.

Matt Simpson is double majoring in Mathematics and Economics and minoring in Philosophy. He is from Boise, Idaho where he is an avid skier and snow boarder. Over the summer, Matt interned in the Sales and Trading division of Barclays Capital, where he will be returning full time after he graduates. Matt served on the Board of Directors of the Corp, the largest 501 (c)(3) non-profit business in the world, as the Business Development Chair. Matt has also been a Teaching Assistant for Principles of Microeconomics as well as Probability and Statistics. Matt’s hobbies include basketball, tennis, chess, and traveling. He serves the Baker Scholars program as co-chair of the Marketing, Communications and Recruiting Committee.

Jaime Steinhardt is pursuing a major in Economics and a minor in French, which inspired her to study at the Université de Strasbourg in France last fall. At Georgetown, Jaime is involved with Global Platinum Securities, a student-run intercollegiate investment fund, where she serves as the Chief Operating Officer. She also works at the Georgetown University Investment Office, covering private equity and international investments. For the past two summers, she has worked at JP Morgan Asset Management on a US Equity Client Portfolio Management team, which furthered her knowledge and interest in markets and investing. In her free time Jaime enjoys experimenting with new recipes, exploring New York, reading David Brook’s op-ed columns in the New York Times, and spending time with family and friends. Jaime chairs the Baker Scholars D.C. Events Committee.
