Morning ladies,
At what age are children supposed to be able to read? Do they still teach kids to read at schools?
My son is 6yrs old and in Gr R and still can''t read. He only knows the letters and numbers. I''m planning to start teaching him how to read on my own. Though I''m not sure how to go about doing it
Be careful Queen,if you dont teach the same way as the schools you will end up confusing them. They start learning to read in grade 1. They start with site words -all the most common words and they just learn to memorise them until they know them. Then they get a very simple reader made up of sentences consisting if the site words and so it goes. They dont teach them phonetic reading like I used to read - but I believe that is changing again.
Hi Queen
I agree with BMJ. They only start reading in Grade 1. Grade R they are read to and they learn a few words. They are also different methods of learning to read so rather leave it to your son''s teacher. At my daughter they do Thrass and they give training at the begining of each year to parents to prevent situations where we end up confusing the kids.
You will be amazed at the reading he will be doing next year. All your worries will disappear. I was shocked when my daughter started reading. They learn so quickly.
For now relax and brace yourself for all the reading next year!!
Thank you ladies for giving me a peace of mind!
I was getting worried because when I was his age I could read already. Yes the teachers had warned me against teaching him at home to avoid confusing him.
Hi
Although I agree that they start reading in Gr.1 I have to warn you that the METHOD used is shocking and is nothing like we used to learn, so prepare yourself. They learn by word identification and not phonetically. You will end up being confused. Good Luck
