Red Dead Redemption on PC? Not likely says Rockstar Popular

Rockstar Games is one of the few companies around that can pump out consecutive hits of well performing games that resonate well with both players and critics alike. Having become far more focused in recent years on the console market, PC ports of their popular titles always take a backseat, being released several months down the line.

We’ve seen the Grand Theft Auto series released on the eager PC market, with LA Noire and Max Payne 3 also scheduled for a debut on that platform soon. One massive hit tile that we won’t see anytime soon however, is the epic western tale of Red Dead Redemption.

“We do know that, yes, there is just one title absent from our PC release plans, that game of course being Red Dead Redemption, and of course we’re well aware that some fans have been asking for it”, said a spokesperson on the Rockstar Blog.

“All we can say is that whenever it is viable (technically, developmentally and business-wise) for us to release a game for PC (or any other particular platform), we will and we usually do; unfortunately, that is just not the case 100 percent of the time for all platforms”.

Red Dead Redemption was a smash hit when it launched last year, and went onto win several awards for the 2010 gaming season, as well as releasing several well received DLC packs, including the rather creepy “Undead Nightmare”, which brought zombies to the old west.

Its a shame that PC players won’t get their hands on it, as RDR must be one of the finest sandbox games ever made, as it combined a ripping yarn with great action and superb visuals.

It sucks our PC gaming brethren (of which I am a part) won’t experience what is so far the greatest game I’ve ever played. Arkham City will overtake it, but until the 18th, it remains RDR.

  • http://twitter.com/Thanticore W. Marais

I feel for the PC gamers out there. It is truly a great title! I would have loved to see this game with high-res textures all around! It looks amazing on console. Imagine what it could’ve looked like on PC…

  • http://twitter.com/D4RKL1NG Martin du preez

R* knows it’s not worth it as they will only steal it off torrents anyways.

  • DenDestroy

    I am too depressed to comment, but here goes ……..  . .   .     . D-’:

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Sir, please take this glass of Bells!

RDR is one of those games that should be compulsory for any gamer to play. In fact, if you’ve just graduated from the Wii, or you’ve finally grown some hair on your ballsack, and a tiny porno stache on your top lip or you’ve finally reached that magical age of 18, RDR should be the first thing that’s handed to you.

  • DenDestroy

Not all PC gamers are pirates, just like not all console fanboys are fags. Don’t stress. Just joking.  ;-p

In fact I have 3 legit copies of GTA4. One for me, one for the missus and one for my kid. If RDR came out on PC I would be first in line to get my original version. To be honest, I have a collection of about 400 games. All originals.

  • DenDestroy

Oh and to set the record straight I also have an Xbox, PS3 and Wii. I have RDR on the Xbox, but eish… those controls, I hang my head in shame.

  • http://twitter.com/D4RKL1NG Martin du preez

You bought GTA4 for your kid? Solid parenting.

  • Anonymous

RDR was allot of fun, glad I played it for free.  Borrowed it from a friend.  Not worth my money if they don’t release a PC version though, so sorry R*.  Bought GTAIV on console, and PC, so that should make up for it 8P

  • Anonymous

Yeah, because console games totally don’t show up online weeks before launch these days. *rolls eyes*

  • http://twitter.com/D4RKL1NG Martin du preez

    True. Damn Xbox pirates.

  • Anonymous

Even the PS3 versions show up online pre-launch now.  Whether they’re being pirated with as much frequency as the Xbox counterparts is really irrelevant, and the times of being able to use the PC as the whipping post for piracy are long over.  Face it, pirates are out there, period.  Whether they own a PS3, 360 or PC, they’re going to find a way.

As with most stellar games, however, you find a way to make your game compelling enough to warrant the buy.  There are a great many folks out there, who will pirate a game, then go out and buy it, because it’s just that damn cool, and they want the full package.  That’s honestly one of the ways I used to demo games…like years ago, I really don’t anymore.  Honestly, if there’s no demo, I tend to write it off because I’m not taking the chance on anything anymore with my money.  It’s not worth it.

As long as games are developed, there will be pirates to try and steal them, that’s simply reality, and developers, media, and gamer’s alike need to get over it.  It’s not like RDR sold poorly, right?  Or GTAIV?

  • http://twitter.com/D4RKL1NG Martin du preez

Agreed. But if you look at the number of piracy vs sales on say a multiplat like COD the financial damage is HUGE between the 3 platforms. It goes:

    1: PC
    2: XBOX360
    3: PS3

Let’s take Crysis 2 for example,pc fanboys went apeshit because it went multiplat but why was that? Crytek knew they would have made a huge financial loss if they released it on pc only.

I once saw a stat that for example 3 million people were playing crysis on the servers while the game had only sold let’s say 1.5 million (I think Nick can back me up on this).

  • Anonymous

I would imagine that’s because there are 2-3x more PC’s out there than 360′s or PS3′s.  Easily 3-4x the amount of each sold.  That could have something to do with it ;)  If you look at demographics, thievery usually occurs in greater numbers…in greater populations.

Crysis 2 sucked, that’s why PC gamer’s went nuts over it.  It was another corridor shooter, in a sea of corridor shooters.  I could see a great many Crytek supporters pirating it, just out of spite.  There are plenty of people willing to do things even more petty than that, so that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

It’s always something I’ve heard in the console/pc debate, that  ’graphics don’t mean everything’, when PC gamer’s complain about something, but it seems to me that very few arguments on PC are predicated on that particular subject.  Fact is, there’s more than just graphics to a game, and while sure, it’s nice to be able to go ape$hit in that dept, there’s more to games than just that, as criteria.  Off the top of my head?  Wide open sandbox environments (GTAIV has this on console, but it’s interrupted with a vast array of loading screens, Stalker, Arma 2, Crysis 1 and Warhead etc… all have this and it’s crazy fun to interact with), AI NPC’s that actually interact with each other, actual bullet (bullets arc over distances, and is different depending on caliber) and impact physics (wood, metal, glass, sheetrock, brick, etc..), dedicated servers, punkbuster, mod tools.  And that’s just a few things.

But yeah, there are always going to be more pirates on PC, there are simply more PC owners.  I don’t condone it, though.  I wish there were less imo, but you can’t stop people from feeling entitled to things.

  • http://twitter.com/CaptainNemo42 Charles Small

I second that, from both of you! RDR is awesome. I’ve caught myself telling my PC gaming friends about the game, only to realise that it’s not available to them.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

    Lol, Now that’s a burn!

  • Jean du Toit

That’s not a problem Rockstar. It’s not like we have to play every game that’s released. Besides, I finished GTA4. I don’t need to play the same game set in the wild west.

  • http://twitter.com/CaptainNemo42 Charles Small

I’m sorry dude, But GTA4 and RDR are two different things. Different mechanics like the horse riding.

Its like LA Noire being something different although its still an open world game. still made by R*

    Dear PC only gamers.

Go buy a console now, get the GOTY edition of this game and come thank me in 60 hours time.

  • Anonymous

It was easier just to borrow it from my friend.  No need to buy it =)

  • http://twitter.com/tauriqmoosa Tauriq Moosa

Thank you for the Bells … but I’m a Jack man myself. I’d take a cigar though.

  • http://twitter.com/tauriqmoosa Tauriq Moosa

Really, aside from the open world and “driving” aspects, it’s the only thing “equally similar” to GTA. Other than, it *improves* and *refines* everything about GTA IV. It’s better written, more focused, beautiful, engaging, and fun. There is no point of bordeom, there’s fast-travel, there’s hundreds of things to do and the landscape and weather are just amazing.

One of the greatest moments I’ve ever experienced in my life – yes, my life – was crossing into Mexico as the player character in RDR; while the sun plummeted down the horizon, tearing like a fingernail across the pale blue skin of of sky. Aside from wind in the valleys and crumbling rock, there was silence, then slowly a soft guitar melody and softer voice began singing, as the beautiful track from José González, “Far Away”, began to play. It was an amazing moment.

    GTA can go suck it.

  • Jean du Toit

No thanks. I’d rather go play it at a friend, get bored and not have wasted 3k on something fairly worthless.
