Did Microsoft just out their next-gen console in a movie trailer? That will have to be up to you to decide but all we know is that an Xbox 720 logo does in fact appear in the latest trailer for Hugh Jackman’s new odd futuristic robot fighter, Reel Steel.

The movie takes place in 2020 and features a ton of logo placement, but GameInformer reports that an eagle-eyed reader from GI.com noticed that the Xbox 360 logo doesn’t say 360, but 720 at the 0:46 mark. So is this confirmation that Microsoft are at least going to actually go for the Xbox 720 name for their next console?

The whole idea of going to 720 and then 1080 does kinda work into the fact that those happen to also be names of high-definition resolutions… so who knows. Watch the full trailer after the jump and spot it for yourself.

For the millionth time, they won’t call it 720. The 360 is in reference to 360 degrees of entertainment. Doing a 720 is coming full circle and starting all over again. Besides, it’s a futuristic film, so they can do what they want. It’s in anyway a trailer, you’ll probably notice that it changed in the full film.

Not likely. Given how tightly the console launches are controlled, planning it around a movie that could have its schedule changed does not seem like the right approach.

Instead it’s probably a bit of product placement, but used with some creative license to suit the setting. Same as when Pizza Hut appeared in Demolition Man.

Nick, i’ll hve to disagree with you on the 720/1080 naming scheme being a good one.

Calling the next XBOX the XBOX 720 when one of it’s selling points will be that all games are now 1080p would be confusing to consumers. Rabid fanbois who know all the useless stats make up for a small percentage of the markets

Anyway I think the new Xbox is not going to have a number at the end. It’ll have a name.

But I agree with you, I think they’ll probably go for a name. The only reason why they went for 360 was because they didn’t want to go with xbox 2, since the Playstation was going to be PS3. Supposedly from a marketing perspective, that meant that consumers (being supposedly idiots) would think that the xbox 2 was competing with the Playstation 2…
