The Pulitzer Center has seen a rapid growth of partnerships and alliances with diverse organizations including:
bluecadet is an interactive design firm based in Philadelphia that creates unique digital experiences on the Web. The Pulitzer Center partnered with bluecadet to produce “Heroes of HIV: HIV-AIDS in the Caribbean” – the Pulitzer Center’s first interactive presentation. The Pulitzer Center also partnered with bluecadet to produce award-winning LiveHopeLove.com, which among other honors won an Emmy for new approaches to news and documentary programming.
The Bonner Foundation works with some 80 colleges and universities across the United States through its Bonner Scholars and Bonner Leaders Programs. The Pulitzer Center is a national partner of the Bonner Foundation, providing resources and engagement opportunities for students and faculty to enhance their personal, leadership and professional development skills and expand their knowledge of international issues and perspectives. Through the Campus Liaison program and Global Gateway initiative, the Pulitzer Center offers Bonner Scholars and Leaders opportunities to pair their community service programs with an engaging global awareness component. The Pulitzer Center also offers a Bonner Scholar Internship in its Washington, D.C. office.
The Bureau for International Reporting (BIR) is a non-profit video news organization dedicated to offering coverage of overlooked international news stories to American news providers - and hence the underserved American public. The Pulitzer Center, PBS NewsHour and BIR partnered on a 4-part video series included in the Pulitzer Center's Fragile States Gateway. The Pulitzer Center also supported the BIR's work in Georgia and Russia as part of its Rising Nations series.
The Choices Program at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies is a national education program that develops curricula for the high school level on a wide range of international issues, offers professional development for high school teachers, and sponsors civic education programs for students that link the classroom to the world beyond. Choices worked with the Pulitzer Center to develop several "Teaching with the News" lesson plans and programs.
Civitas Associates, a non-profit organization, offers educational programs for students in public and independent schools in metropolitan St. Louis, Missouri. Civitas' activities foster global awareness and encourage students to become more active citizens of the world and in their local communities. Civitas and its director Arthur Lieber have been instrumental in developing the Pulitzer Center's Global Gateway educational outreach initiative, working with teachers to develop lesson plans specific to the issues covered by Pulitzer Center reporting projects, organizing middle and high school venues for journalists to speak with students and even linking St. Louis students with students abroad.
FRONTLINE/World is a national public TV series that turns its lens on the global community, covering countries and cultures rarely seen on American television. The Pulitzer Center began a partnership in fall 2009 with FRONTLINE/World's 2009 Webby Award-winning series iWitness. Watch the partnership's inaugural iWitness piece with FRONTLINE/World's Joe Rubin interviewing Pulitzer Center's Sarah Stuteville and Alex Stonehill on their reporting in Pakistan's school system and madrassas.
GlobalPost seeks to exploit powerful global demographic, political and economic trends as a journalism website devoted to international news and related content. GlobalPost's mission is to provide a depth, breadth and quality of original international reporting that has been steadily diminishing in too many American newspapers and television networks.
Helium is the leader in citizen journalism online, delivering real insight written by real people. The Pulitzer Center-Helium partnership focuses on our Global Issues/Citizen Voices Contest. Each Global Issues/Citizen Voices Contest features questions based on Pulitzer Center reporting. Top essays receive recognition through a Pulitzer Center Citizen Journalist award.
The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer is seen five nights a week on more than 315 PBS stations across the country (check local listings) and is also available online, via public radio in select markets and via podcast. The NewsHour aired video documentaries on East Timor and Bosnia in November 2009 as part of the Pulitzer Center's Fragile States project, a partnership with the Bureau for International Reporting. We have also collaborated with PBS and the Under-Told Stories Project on global water issues and Sudan.
The Shapiros have supported reporting on maternal mortality issues and educational outreach, including the Pulitzer Gateway Dying for Life.
The Under-Told Stories Project works to expand, sustain and improve coverage of the world outside America in broadcast, print and emerging new media outlets. Its challenge is to direct American eyes to the daily concerns of far away people who increasingly affect our lives. The Under-Told Stories Project partnered with the Pulitzer Center on the Food Insecurity reporting project and Gateway.
WNET's Worldfocus was launched in October 2008 as a nightly broadcast focused exclusively on international news. The program aims to fill a major void in television news, which devoted just seven percent of its airtime in 2008 to world news. The Pulitzer Center's Glass Closet: Sex, Stigma and HIV/AIDS in Jamaica was produced in partnership with Worldfocus and correspondent Lisa Biagiotti. A series of videos began airing in fall 2009, accompanied by the launch of the interactive Glass Closet Pulitzer Gateway.
WSI provides news and research-based analysis to policy-makers around the globe through a variety of publications and services in several languages. It serves as an authoritative and impartial monitor of security issues, while continuing to meet the increasing worldwide demand for information, independent ideas and creative solutions to meet U.S. and global challenges. WSI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the Pulitzer Center's former fiscal sponsor.
Azimuth Media, an independent division of WSI, produced award-winning documentaries, new media and a weekly public television program series on issues in international affairs, Foreign Exchange. The Pulitzer Center was the primary supplier of video documentaries for Foreign Exchange, which reached 10 of the top 15 U.S. markets and 61 percent of the U.S. market overall. Oregon Public Broadcasting was the presenting station for Foreign Exchange and another Pulitzer Center partner. Foreign Exchange is no longer on the air as of fall 2009 but has left a wealth of video resources as a result of constant programming.
