American Landscapes - In the Footsteps of a Tradition
John Morrell. "American Landscapes - In the Footsteps of a Tradition." J. Morrell, One-person Exhibition,"John Morrell, American Landscapes – In the Footsteps of a Tradition", Sherry French Gallery, New York, NY, October 29 – November 22, 2008.
My work investigates peoples’ relationship to nature in our culture today. In my images of urban spaces there is almost always an element of nature, an aspect of my work, which is built on a long history of art’s depiction of nature and man. The American landscape tradition has differed from that of Europe and other cultures. In the exhibition "John Morrell, American Landscapes – In the Footsteps of a Tradition", my approach is to return to the source of the uniqueness in American Landscape Art, the “wilderness” that inspired the earlier American artists. I worked at the painting sites of 19th century artists such as John Kensett, including the coast near Newport,Rhode Island, Niagara Falls,Ontario, and Bah Bish Falls,Massachusetts. My work brings together a strong landscape tradition in American painting with the contemporary concerns and issues of urban development, preservation of the natural environment and perceptions of our surroundings.
