STOCKHOLM: The newly formed Syrian National Council says it has agreed on a democratic framework for a future Syria and wants international observers to be allowed into the country.
Jens Orback, secretary general of the Olof Palme International Center, which hosted the weekend conference, says the council agreed that President Bashar Assad’s regime must be overthrown and that Syria’s minorities should be given legal protection.
The council also decided that international observers are needed in Syria and that international sanctions against specific individuals are better than broad sanctions against Syrian society.
Abdulbaset Sieda, a member of the Syrian National Council, said Monday the opposition will fight together against the regime because they all “agree that this regime belongs to the past.”
