Analysis: “Presidential Succession Scenarios in Egypt”

Gregory Aftandilian released a report entitled “Presidential Succession Scenarios in Egypt and Their Impact on U.S.-Egyptian Strategic Relations.” The monograph, written prior to the January 25 revolution, outlines possible political outcomes after Mubarak. Aftandilian’s work also examines the power structure in Egypt under Mubarak as well as the constitutional system and the limitations it poses for political inclusion. After discussing issues like the military and the Muslim Brotherhood, Aftandilian offers policy recommendations for U.S. officials, each tailored to the different political scenarios. He also addresses possible consequences for the broader strategic relationship between Egypt and the U.S.
