Georgetown sponsors overseas study programs in various countries, including: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Chile, China, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Scotland, Russia, Senegal, Spain, Switzerland, and Taiwan.

Students may enroll in a Georgetown-sponsored program or study on an independent program overseas. Independent programs must be pre-approved by the Dean's Office. Students ordinarily matriculate directly into the foreign university, enrolling in the host university's courses with native students who are pursuing degree programs. By being fully integrated at the host university, Georgetown students are better able to make the most of the overseas experience.

The College transfers credit only for approved courses in which students have taken and passed a final exam and an official transcript is received. Grades from overseas coursework are not computed in the Georgetown grade point average but are recorded on the transcript. A maximum of 16 credits/5 courses per semester are transferred to the Georgetown degree. No more than 10 courses for the full year are transferred. Overseas study procedures

1. Sophomores planning to study overseas during the fall of junior year or all of junior year should meet with their advisor in ICC 303 early in their sophomore year. Juniors who will study overseas during the spring of junior year should meet with their advisor in WGR 108 in advance of the relevant deadlines.

2. Visit the Overseas Study Resource Center in the Office of International Programs (OIP) (Car Barn, 2nd floor) to obtain information (including application deadlines) on sites of interest. The Guide to Overseas Study, available in the OIP, contains helpful information about all programs, as does the OIP website. Materials in the Resource Center include student evaluations, university catalogs, published information on various study options, and program summaries.

3. Make an appointment to meet with a member of the Overseas Studies advising staff in the OIP to discuss site preferences. Obtain an application and study proposal for each site to which you want to apply.

4. Meet with your major department's overseas study adviser to discuss your study proposal. Complete the study proposal for each foreign university, listing all courses in which you plan to enroll and the equivalent course/requirement at Georgetown. You should plan to enroll full-time. Obtain the signature of your major department's overseas study adviser (this may not be your faculty adviser).

5. Submit your signed study proposal to the Dean's Office for final approval.

6. Return the completed application and study proposal to the OIP, having made a copy for your files.

7. Take the overseas study language exam administered by the appropriate language department, if required.

8. Applications will be reviewed by the Nomination and Placement Committee for final selection.

Overseas Study Academic Planning Guidelines

Coursework completed at an approved overseas site can fulfill a variety of requirements, as well as free electives. Before initiating the application process, it is important to identify remaining degree requirements reviewing your degree audit through MyAccess and meeting with your dean and major adviser. We also encourage students to pursue coursework in areas that distinguish the particular institution selected. Please keep in mind that:

• General education courses are often not available at many overseas sites. It is best to declare majors, minors and certificate programs before applying.

• All overseas courses to be transferred toward a major/minor/certificate should be pre-approved by the department or program on the study proposal.

• Language majors with a second language requirement are encouraged to complete the four courses at Georgetown. Students have difficulty in finding appropriate second language courses overseas.
