The Center for Iron and Steelmaking Research (CISR) is a University/Industry
Cooperative Center within the department for Materials Science and Engineering
at Carnegie Mellon University. The CISR is a University/Industry co-operative
center devoted to education and research related to the production of iron and
steel. CISR was established in 1985 with a grant from the National Science Foundation
and eleven industrial members. The Center currently has 20 major industrial members
and is the largest academic center for steelmaking research in the USA. The director
of the CISR is Professor Richard J. Fruehan, Professor Sridhar Seetharaman is
the associate director of the Center. Professor Alan W. Cramb is a contributing
member of the Center. The center coordinator is Mrs. Madeline A. Lesko.
The CISR conducts research projects in ironmaking, steelmaking, clean steel,
and casting. Typically the Center has about twelve projects at any given time.
The projects are designed in conjunction with and approved by the industrial
partners and typically last about three years.
CISR also has unique high temperature equipment. For example, confocal
scanning laser microscopy, x-ray and x-ray fluoroscopy and double hot thermocouple
microscopy which allows for visualization of phenomena at high temperatures.
