Viroli suggests that a people can be unfree even though they are not oppressed, and that this condition arises from being subject to the arbitrary or enormous power of people like Silvio Berlusconi. As Italy begins to follow Greece into uncharted financial waters we discuss whether the kind of society that the TV mogul and prime minister has helped to create is contributing to the ongoing Euro disaster.
