Greek riot police have fired tear gas at protesters in front of the parliament building in Athens as tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets nationwide.

A 48-hour general strike is under way as parliament prepares to vote on the latest round of austerity measures, including more tax hikes, pay cuts and job losses.

The BBC's Chris Morris said there were running battles between police and a small minority of protesters.
