1643 RUGBY UNION: The International Rugby Board have announced the six-man shortlist for the IRB Player of the Year 2011 award, with the winner to be announced in Auckland on Monday. France captain Thierry Dusautoir and the New Zealand trio of scrum-half Piri Weepu, flanker Jerome Kaino and centre Ma'a Nonu. The other two nominees are Australia's flanker David Pocock and scrum-half Will Genia.

1635 FOOTBALL: Martin Olsson has said he is confident Blackburn can turn things around despite being rooted to the foot of the Premier League table. "You can't ignore the league table because you have to be realistic and know that you are in a bad position," he told Lancashire Telegraph. "We know it is important to pick up points but if we play like we did at QPR then we can pick these points up. We know that."

1628 GOLF: Jose Maria Olazabal is backing Sergio Garcia to be part of his Ryder Cup team next September on the course where he became a world star.

1554 FOOTBALL: Wales are to play Norway in a friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday 12 November, the Football Association of Wales have confirmed. The fixture, will be the first time the sides have met since Wales recorded a 3-0 win at the Racecourse Ground in February 2008.

1547 FOOTBALL: Ivory Coast maintained their place as Africa's highest-ranked side despite dropping three places in the latest Fifa rankings. Rwanda were Africa's biggest movers for October's ranking released by the world governing body on Wednesday. The top three places in African remained unchanged with Egypt and Ghana second and third respectively.

1538 FOOTBALL: Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry believes Tuesday night's dramatic Champions League win over Villarreal has provided a "massive confidence booster" ahead of Sunday's Manchester derby. "We will just go into the game, knowing it is a massive one, with a little bit more confidence. "But it is not a place you can go and relax - we have got to go and play our best game of the season to get something out of it."We respect Manchester United and hopefully it will be a good game."

1452 MOTORSPORT: Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel wants motor racing safety improvements following the death of IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon, although drivers accept the dangers involved. The Red Bull driver called Wheldon's death a "big loss" but said risks can not be avoided.

1340 FORMULA 1: Red Bull Team Prinicipal Christian Horner also paid tribute to Indycar driver Dan Wheldon, who was killed in a crash in America last weekend. ''I've had known Dan since he was 9 years of age. He was a phenomenal driver and a great loss to the sport.''

1332 FOOTBALL: Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has denied claims he mocked a Villarreal player after his dramatic winner in the third minute of injury time in the Champions League on Tuesday. Aguero, said: "I have no interest in getting involved in controversies, but I have to deny having mocked a Villarreal player. "Everyone can attest to my discipline and professionalism, I wouldn't do something like that."

1326 FORMULA 1: Red Bull Team Prinicipal Christian Horner has described the team's double success as a 'whirlwind' still taking time to sink in. Horner told BBC Look East it's down to his team's 'herculean' work ethic.

1319 FOOTBALL: Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is concerned about the influence of foreign owners of top-flight clubs, and claims it is only a matter of time before they insist competitive domestic matches are played abroad. "Eventually, you will end up playing loads of games around the world. They will take the games to where they want to play them. If you have owners from China, India, Russia, America, they will want to take their teams there to play."

1208 FOOTBALL: Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has told BBC Radio Stoke that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was one of main transfer targets during the summer. Pulis wanted to sign the 18-year-old winger from Southampton, but realised that he would struggle to do so once Manchester United and Arsenal declared their interest. Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Arsenal for an initial £12m in August.

1020 RUGBY UNION: England flanker Tom Croft says it is 'disgusting' that people are questioning Martin Johnson's future as manager of the team. Croft told BBC Radio Leicester. "I think he [Johnson] is the ideal man for the job. I don't think any other team in the world has such a prominent figurehead. So hopefully he'll decide and stick with the job."

1013 CRICKET: Test great Shane Warne tells Australian Associated Press that he has not ruled out a return to professional cricket in Australia's revamped Big Bash Twenty20 tournament starting in December, saying he's the fittest he's ever been. An election has to be held before 1 January.
