ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING #15

Alright you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

We're living through a magical moment … #OCCUPYWALLSTREET has catalyzed into an international insurgency for democracy … the mood at our assemblies is electric … people who go there are drawn into a Gandhian spirit of camaraderie and hope for a new kind of future. Across the globe the 99% are marching! You have inspired more than you know. People are digging into Act One of the long Spring.

Its now time to amp up the edgy theatrics … deviant pranks, subversive performances and playful détournements of all kinds. Open your insurrectionary imagination. Anything, from a bottom-up transformation of the global economy to changing the way we eat, the way we get around, the way we live, love and communicate … be the spark that sustains a global revolution of everyday life!

As the movement matures, lets consider a response to our critics. Lets occupy the core of our global system. Lets dethrone the greed that defines this new century. Lets work to define our one great demand.

OCTOBER 29 – #ROBINHOOD GLOBAL MARCH

This is a proposal for the general assemblies of the Occupy movement.

Eight years ago, on February 15, 2003, upwards of 15 million people in sixty countries marched together to stop President Bush from invading Iraq … a huge chunk of humanity lived for one day without dead time and glimpsed the power of a united people's movement. Now we have an opportunity to repeat that performance on an even larger scale.

On October 29, on the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, let's the people of the world rise up and demand that our G20 leaders immediately impose a 1% #ROBINHOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades. Let's send them a clear message: We want you to slow down some of that $1.3-trillion easy money that's sloshing around the global casino each day – enough cash to fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world.

Take this idea to your local general assembly and join your comrades in the streets on October 29.

for the wild,

Passions run high in this

by fRITZ on October 20 2011, @07:23 am

Passions run high in this movement.. I just want to say- WE DONT NEED TO CUSS AND BITCH AT EACHOTHER. This is a movment of autonomous beings in solidarity with eachother.. if people are behind this proposal- let them march and demand what they think will help the greater good.. if you don't agree- dont participate. simple as that. This movmement and its people do not speak for any one individual. Seriously people, we have enough wrong in this world- whats the damn point of picking more enemies?!
Also, our issues are too vast and diverce to just state ONE demand- taking money out of politics/ ending corporate person hood are phenominal ideas, but in my estimation it would take a series of smaller incrimental changes- like chipping away at the block of ice until it gets thin enough to melt away.

mostly, lets just remember that we are in this together- it is so disheartening to see so much anger between people who are generaly on the same page as one-another.

If we want to see a better world- lets start by treating eachother better, eh?!

i hope the crash comes sooner

Petition: Let taxpayers

by Anonymous on October 20 2011, @12:35 am

Petition: Let taxpayers choose where their money will go.

"The Petition of Choices will make our government more transparent and effective. Our government will let taxpayers choose where their money will go, by setting up accounts for different government departments. For example, there will be social security account for elderly and economically challenged people; health account for hospital services, and education account for school and training, a transportation account for roads and bridges, as well as a defense account for military. Every quarter the government departments will have the mandate to publish a report telling taxpayers how much money they used and how it was allocated. Additionally, the report will estimate how much money the government will need for the following quarter and for which departments, however the taxpayers will deposit their money wherever they consider more important. There can be a pending account for overflowing funds from other accounts or for someone who has no choices. The pending account maybe used for the underfunded but valuable departments."

It is time now for the people

by Max from Montreal on October 19 2011, @06:39 pm

It is time now for the people to unify behind 1 common, crucial idea to get the governments to act to save us from further economic collapses

Before the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstration subsides, the focus must be turned onto one undisputed fact that the last straw that broke the camel’s back of the economy was the conspiracy of some large financial institutions with the rating agencies. Whatever happened prior to the last stage, which spread wrongdoings to all levels, the bundling of worthless mortgages by some of the major financial institutions and the assignment of “Triple A” ratings to them by the ratings agencies and the selling of these bundled mortgages to other financial institutions across the world was fraudulent. And some of the principal conspirators must pay for these deeds, or we will all be witnessing a new and worse collapse of the world economy before this one is healed.

The absence of one shared, basic, clear and critical goal in this “Occupy” protest will most likely end in inaction by the governments of the "developed" countries and a return to the status quo. To focus on one fundamental issue will galvanize the people and the media and force some people in power who were not involved in the underlying conspiracy to act strongly in our common interest to our common benefit.

How about this as a unifying

by torontojeff3 on October 19 2011, @09:15 pm

How about this as a unifying demand: SHOW ME THE MONEY!
Demand a law that all Government expenditures, at all levels of government, and down to the last ordered cup of coffee, be made available for public scrutiny. When there is no place to hide we will finally get value for money.
A unifying idea has to be simple, practical; and that will produce a paradigm shift in the relationship between government and the citizenry.
SHOW ME THE MONEY - because it's our money.

WORK TO GET MONEY OUT OF

by pat.cardiff on October 20 2011, @04:40 am

WORK TO GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS.

That was the original design, right? I support that 99%. But the movement LACKS FOCUS at this critical juncture.
I walk by MacPherson Square every morning and no, I don't want to physically be out there demonstrating, and I feel sorry for them cause they're in the rain and they can't feel comfort like me. But there are the homeless, and there's the rainforest, and there is planned parenthood and there are fuck-all other problems.

SOMEONE HAS GOT TO POSE THE QUESTION AND CONCENTRATE ON IT.

Otherwise the MOMENTUM is squandered, this movement will go down in history as passive and ineffectual. And no, this isn't the workable Ghandi type of passivity - Ghandi was a person, symbol, savior. OWS is a massive jumble of ideals. It's generally disaffected young people, techn savvy (yes, you drink the coolaid every day, and your revolution is being broadcast on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, wherever. You are using the same tactics to garner eyeballs as the marketing agencies you repudiate).

C'MON, look at movement in the future and ask WHERE IS THIS GOING?
Sustainability means PLANNING.

It should be easy to draw up plans of how to get money out of politics. ACTIONS.
Threaten to NOT VOTE.
Expose the corporations who have politicians in their pockets - but that'll take the media, again.
Make statements about WHAT YOU BELIEVE TO BE THE BEST WAY FORWARD TO THE REALIZATION OF YOUR GOALS.

If 99% of us REALLY believe in this, we will not want you to fail. But see, the movement has placed itself on this visual precipice - you've dedicated yourself to too many ideals, which is that many more opportunities for people to disagree. In other words, you have started hemorrhaging percentage points.

these are my observations:

by Anonymous on October 20 2011, @07:22 am

these are my observations: the movement has been born of awareness that no longer can we tolerate the deep inequities in our system which have now created deep suffering across the 99%. the movement is organic, democratic, and without hierarchy. the movement is presently a question, and we must live in the question for a while longer. we will not be pushed for answers, nor pushed to define one idea for the system to attack. we will continue the dialogue, the learning, the process, the path. we systemic cancer was created over approximately 400 years. the movement has existed only for a matter of weeks. none of this will be squandered. the world will never be the same after this. Enough is Enough Rally

by liewbob on October 19 2011, @06:33 pm

Enough is Enough Rally http://citizensintervention.com/

WHEN: October 29, 2011 • 12 noon
WHERE: U.S. Capitol West Front Lawn
WHY: Democracy will not die on our watch

"Sometimes an institution becomes too sick to fix itself…Sometimes an institution, like an individual, needs an intervention, from people, from friends, from outside."
— Lawrence Lessig, Republic, Lost

America is at a crossroads. Our political system itself allows powerful special interests and party ideologues to have more influence with our elected Representatives than average people. Washington has ground to a halt amidst cynical electioneering while tens of millions continue to suffer in this struggling economy. It is clear that Congress has become “too sick to fix itself.”

These are reasons to be discouraged. However, we love our country and we must summon our dignity, strength and the spirit of unity. We must resolve to restore a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Giving up is not an option.

Hundreds of people from all over the U.S. are signing up to speak out at the US Capitol on October 29 about how Washington's dysfunction and corruption have impacted their lives. Our personal stories, one after another after another, will announce our determination to rescue Congress from the corrupting influence of money.

On Monday after the rally, we will go to Congress together and talk to our representatives. We will persist with the intervention every week until we are heard. We ask you to go to the district offices of your representatives to continue the intervention.

The 1% tax is nice. But what

by Anonymous on October 19 2011, @06:28 pm

The 1% tax is nice. But what about the environment that is already so compromised?

I propose that Occupiers voluntarily take three positions

1) we will create no new humans, at least for the next two years.
2) we will not fly anywhere, for at least the next two years
3) we will not eat any ocean dweller, for at least the next two years

The whole world should stop

by Anonymous on October 19 2011, @09:45 pm

The whole world should stop having kids? Even accidently? Now who is going to rule the world we are trying to change? Not going to happen on my watch.
Not flying? We will not eat fish?
Sounds like you want to bankrupt airlines and save the fish...I'm positive if we all put our heads together we can come up with some more practical solutions.

How about instead of minimum wages, corporations are forced to pay a minimum precentage? This way capitalism can fly free..the big guy can get richer, but the 99% won't be left in the mud anymore. As the business grows so do the people. The millions are spread a little more even. Someone will always have more than me, I have come to accept that, but there is no reason for them to get rich while I sit still making them their money,

Just organize another date

by Anonymous on October 19 2011, @05:07 pm

Just organize another date where people can unite. We are only at the beginning and people are simply looking for the next time to meet and converse on a global level. We are gaining strength and finding our legs! Oct 29th is fine, as it is right before the G20, but don't muddle things up with a discussion of a Tobin tax. It is too early for this....

You guys want to talk

by Anonymous on October 19 2011, @04:43 pm

You guys want to talk democracy. Why has no one seemed to notice the fact that a direct democracy (we all get a vote on everything) is actually feasible in this day and age. The Internet and cheap computers make this VERY possible. I mean if you want this movement to have sway whatsoever, I would give this a look. I mean, the governments of the G8 nations could EASILY foot the bill for a voting machine that's connected to a network in every single domicile. Everyone votes in a referendum on laws that are made by everyone. The voting age would be whenever you would care to. You could make it highly searchable, and the commentary would drive the laws and their popularity. Seriously this is viable. It also suits this movement.

Forgive all debt. Make 2012 a Jubilee Year.

Just a couple quick notes. 1

by lbush on October 19 2011, @04:27 pm

Just a couple quick notes.

1 Robin Hood is a character in folklore with differing accounts of who he was, what he did and why. The general theme is he took from the wealthy and powerful and gave to the poor. There have been movies made about the character but they too are works of fiction. We are not bound to maintain some historical accuracy here and can use the imagery how we like.

2. A financial transaction tax is not a wealth tax. It would apply mainly to banks and other trading firms and would have no impact on the overwhelming majority of consumers or businesses. It would be a small tax applied to what is a woefully under-taxed sector. Indeed it could, as Tobin suggested (the Nobel winning economist who first proposed such a tax), cut down on the high-risk speculation that occurs.

3. It is obviously a small reformist measure. On the other hand: it is winnable, joins with an existing global movement, could hugely help the 99% in the global south and starts to impose responsibilities on the finance sector. All of which are valuable outcomes.

4. Who said there can only be one global action?

Agreed!

Where does this shit peeve project of George Soros' get off in trying to "steal" (at least that part's right). All financial transactions? Taxation? Fuck you.

The answer is always to follow the money. And this piece of shit campaign stinks of George Soros' money.

EXACTLY. Wasting energy of

by Anonymous on October 20 2011, @01:24 am

EXACTLY.

Wasting energy of millions of people for small goals.

Now I think this is the first attempt of deflection, and right from the creators of the movement.

THE ONLY GOAL:

SEPARATE. MONEY. FROM. POLITICS.

You're gonna chase smaller goals, you're gonna burn out.

Was Adbusters paid to create a fake revolution to discharge the discontent and make another revolt impossible?

I still don't think so, but this particular littler effort on taxing a part of the rotten system - is totally misguided.

SEPARATE. MONEY. FROM. POLITICS.

I feel like I should explain

by Anonymous on October 20 2011, @02:03 am

I feel like I should explain this "take money out of politics" for those who don't get it.

Here's is the money used to buy laws by anyone who can pay enough: http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/

Now, whatever small win you are going to achieve, like for example "taxation of every trading transaction" - IS GOING TO GET ROLLED BACK by the politicians PAID TO DO SO.

It's only going to be a TEMPORARY WIN. Because money is power, it's energy, and without an equal counter-energy, this energy only needs a short time to achieve its targets, which is selling the law to mega corporations who can pay for it.

However, once the congressman represents THE PEOPLE, we're gonna get all the other wins for free, including the one you are now trying to deflect the movement to.

PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR ENERGY ON TEMPORARY TARGETS.
