Dr. Sanjay Gupta
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, contributes periodic reports to the "CBS Evening News" through an agreement between CNN and CBS News. Dr. Gupta continues to work full-time with CNN.
Dr. Gupta is chief medical correspondent for CNN, having previously served as medical correspondent (2001-04) and senior medical correspondent (2004-06). He is a practicing neurosurgeon, performing surgery weekly at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he also serves as associate chief of neurosurgery. Dr. Gupta is a member of the staff and faculty of the department of neurosurgery at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
For CNN, he has covered the Sept. 11, 2001, attack, on the World Trade Center in New York; the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, for which the cable channel won a Peabody Award; and the tsunami in South Asia, which garnered a Columbia University-Alfred I. DuPont Award. Dr. Gupta has reported extensively from Iraq and Kuwait before and during the war in Iraq, including as an embedded reporter with the U.S. Navy's medical unit. Along the way, he provided live coverage from a desert operating room of the first operation performed during the war.
Dr. Gupta hosts "House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta," the 30-minute weekend program on CNN, contributes health stories to CNN.com and writes a column for TIME magazine, among many other responsibilities. He recently launched a weekly podcast for CNN.com called "Paging Dr. Gupta," which is also available on iTunes. Dr. Gupta also produces primetime health-related specials for CNN. His first book, "Chasing Life," will be published in April 2007 by Warner Books.
He is the recipient of a 2006 Emmy Award for a CNN report called "Charity Hospital." Dr. Gupta also received the Atlanta Press Club's 2004 Journalist of the Year Award, as well as all three health and medicine citations of the National Headliner Awards in 2006, the first year they were bestowed for that category.
Dr. Gupta was graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in biomedical sciences and from the University of Michigan Medical Center with a doctorate of medicine. He lives in Atlanta.
