America got an unwanted crash course in microbiology in the months following the events of September 11, 2001, as a series of anthrax-laced letters sent through the U.S. mail spread illness and terror across the nation. As the FBI and other law enforcement agencies launched a massive and ultimately inconclusive investigation into the attacks that the FBI says killed five and sickened 17, worried Americans scrambled to lay in a supply of antibiotics - just in case.
