Steve Hartman has been a CBS News correspondent since 1998, having served as a part-time correspondent for the previous two years.

His latest project for the "CBS Evening News," titled "Assignment America," lets viewers decide where he goes and what he covers.

Hartman is also well known for his multiple award-winning feature series, "Everybody Has a Story." Hartman proved the adage by tossing a dart at a map of America and then randomly picked an interview subject from the local phone book. Debuting in 1998, Hartman produced more than 100 such pieces.

He has won many prestigious broadcast journalism awards for his work: an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, an Emmy Award for writing and four RTNDA/Edward R. Murrow Awards, including three consecutive citations for Best Writing.

Previously, Hartman was a columnist for "60 Minutes Wednesday" and was a correspondent for two primetime CBS News magazines, "Public Eye With Bryant Gumbel" (1997-98) and "Coast to Coast" (1996-97).

Before that, he was a feature reporter for KCBS-TV, the CBS owned station in Los Angeles (1994-98). His daily segment on the KCBS early evening newscast looked at offbeat stories and personalities in Southern California and earned him numerous awards.

Hartman also was a feature reporter for WABC-TV New York (1991-94) and KSTP TV Minneapolis (1987 91). He began his career in broadcast journalism at WTOL TV Toledo, Ohio, as a news intern and general assignment reporter (1984-87).

All told, Hartman has collected nearly two dozen local Emmy Awards for writing, reporting and editing.

Hartman was graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1985 with a degree in broadcast journalism. He lives in New York.

Mr. Hartman, I just wanted to let you know that I revisit your story about Jason whenever I need a reminder of the good in this world. Many people have told and retold the same story, but not to the same effect as your own. Thank you for providing us this wonderful piece.

I have been a CBS evening news viewer for longer that I can remember or even want to admit but I must say one of the features I have come to enjoy as much as those offered up by Charles Kuralt but his piece that aired tonight on Gold Star Children still tears me up just thinking how small a piece of those Gold Star Children this piece highlights but highlights them very well.
I am a member of the group of childred who were fortunate enough to have their fathers come home from WWII only to loose their life to thigs like polio when they were just getting to enjoy the lives they secured. My father was one of those who saw two sons and a daughter born, one son lost at 2 months and he was gone before his daughter was 2 years old. We too lost most of our history and knowledge about what their father's did at that critical time in the world. I only recently found out that he was an aircraft mechanic, same MOS as HIS father in WWI. My MOS was slightly different, Wepons System Electrical Systems. With a young mother who was fortunate enough to find a young marine home from Korea who was willing to marry a young widow and raise another mans childred. We were so lucky. I'm sure there were many of my generation that did not fare so well in similar circumstances. Great work Steve! I look forward to every piece you bring to us!

I never missed CBS evening news with Katie Couric every Monday because of Steve Hartman's Assignment America. Since Scott Pelley took over, I think I saw it only once. Where can we watch Assignment America on a regular basis?
Thank you.

I am also looking for Assignment America. I hope that Steve is just taking a leave of absence. I miss the show. I look for it on Monday nights. I especially liked the international travel series but I like all of the shows.
