Eye-to-eye with giant blue whale

(CBS News)

Two kayakers had an up-close encounter of the Southern California coast with the largest animal on Earth.

Paddling off Redondo Beach, south of Los Angeles, they got an amazing close-up view of a blue whale.

Rick Coleman even plunged into the water for a face-to-face meeting -- and brought bring back video to prove it.

Susan Coleman recalled, "He was so close, and I was kinda all excited, and, y'know, it gets your heart rate pumping!

"And the fin came up close to the kayak, and my first thing was like, 'Oh, Rick!' And I didn't scream out, but that was my first thought - 'Oh my gosh, I hope he didn't get hit."'

The 50-foot-long whale didn't hit him but, or an unforgettable moment, the man and the graceful giant were eye-to-eye.

What a once-in-a-lifetime experience! I just hope this doesn't inspire other kayakers or divers to think this is the right thing to do. Presumably these kayakers weren't looking for the whale, that this was a highly unusual encounter.

Whales are best viewed from a distance, unless you're a researcher. Jumping in with such a huge animal, when you've had no training whatsoever was foolhardy at the least and extremely dangerous at the most.

Well this should make it easy enough for the authorities to charge them both with violating the MMPA, Caught on tape!

Great,... harassing the whales. Must we do such to EVERY living life form on the planet?

What's next? Video of the LAST whale in the world being killed?

Oh, shut up already, so dramatic.....Why is taking a video a problem, the whale couldn't care less if this was a floating piece of wood or humans.....the whale probably liked the encounter......Humans are living forms too, we have been on this planet for 4 million years, and can watch or interact with whoever we feel like.
