My childhood was as bad & in many ways worse than his. I thought I came through it unscathed. I lacked empathy because I had to keep the wall around me rock solid. I could not tolerate weakness from anyone. Then in my mid-30's the crack began to form. Thank God there were resources available when I needed them. I agree with violet54 "his anger seems to be reflected in his lack of empathy for those that may have faced some of the same challenges."
Maybe Senator Brown would gain some insight from watching the recent 60 Minutes show "Hard times generation: homeless kids". If 25% of the kids in this country go to bed hungry, what else is going on in their families? I can appreciate his focus on the alarming deficit, but targeting social programs that are already struggling to offer services to those in need is short-sighted at least & perhaps indicative of his lack of empathy for those most vulnerable.
I'm just really curious what your credentials are for "working in the mental health field." I suspect that you've never had training to work with abuse survivors, especially survivors of sex abuse. Therapy is way more than "a coping strategy"!
I also agree that he has bigger personal trouble down the road because of this coldness and that he did not get help with his issues. I will not feel sorry for him when that troube finds him...Scott Brown...WHO CARES!!!
You know, I don't think we should expect that our elected representatives agree with all of our views. They are elected because we expect them to have a wider view and we give them our trust to vote independently based on how they see things from point to point. So as voters we trust someone to have the greater good in mind -- a good perhaps that we, as individuals, generally hearing only one side of an argument, are not privileged to.
