"Special Forces" Fraud William Hillar Sentenced

U.S. Attorney's Office August 30, 2011

Baltimore, Maryland - U.S. District Judge William D. Quarles, Jr. sentenced William G. Hillar, age 66, of Millersville, Maryland, today to 21 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for wire fraud in connection with a scheme to lie about his military experience and academic credentials in order to gain employment for teaching and training. Judge Quarles also ordered Hillar to pay restitution of $171,415 and perform 500 community hours at the Maryland State Veterans Cemeteries.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Richard A. McFeely of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Special Agent in Charge Robert Craig of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service - Mid-Atlantic Field Office.

"William G. Hillar claimed that he had earned praise as a hero, but the truth is that he deserves condemnation as a liar," said U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. "He did not serve in the U.S. Army, did not receive military training in counter-terrorism and psychological warfare, and did not lose
his daughter to sex traffickers. "

"Mr. Hillar's fraudulent representations came to the FBI's attention from concerned citizens, including former members of the Special Forces community. This investigation is an example of the difficulty the public faces trying to verify the accuracy of information on the Internet," said FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard A. McFeely.

 

RIP CPO Michael R Tatham

 The Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Michael R. Tatham, 33, of University Place, Wash., was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident, Oct. 12, while on rest and recuperation leave from supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Bali, Indonesia. Tatham was assigned to a West Coast based Naval Special Warfare unit.

RIP SPC Ricardo Cerros Jr

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spc. Ricardo Cerros Jr., 24, of Salinas, Calif., died Oct. 8 in Logar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Rangers of Mogadishu Rain Into Afghanistan Country Music

CAMP MARMAL, Afghanistan – The Ranger Tour, comprised of four former Army Rangers, touched down in northern Afghanistan to visit soldiers of the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Oct. 4-5.

The tour was the first of American 300’s Warrior Tours that highlights profiles in extreme courage.

Whether it was enduring a 500-foot combat jump onto the small island of Grenada, patrolling the jungles of Vietnam or navigating the streets of battle-ravaged Mogadishu, Danny McKnight, Keni Thomas, Max Mullen and Charlie Manis have experiences that few others can account for.

Pictured: Keni Thomas, a country music artist who is a former Army Ranger who was part of the battle of Mogadishu in Somalia in 1993, plays his single, "Another Mexico Song."

This was a chance for the Rangers to visit Afghanistan and see firsthand what soldiers of this current generation are experiencing.

Petty Officer 1st Class (SEAL) Caleb A. Nelson, 26, of Omaha, Neb.,died after his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while conducting a combat patrol in Zabul province, Afghanistan on Oct.1. Nelson was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit, Norfolk, Va.

PJ's Battle Terrain, Enemy, & Air to Rescue 2 Afghan Soldiers

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan - Rescuing injured coalition forces in Afghanistan is something the 83rd Expeditionary Rescue Squadron is accustomed to doing, but flying over 12,000-foot mountains and refueling in air presented dynamic challenges during a mission Sept. 11, 2011.

Airmen from the 83 ERQS were pre-positioned at Forward Operating Base Ghazni to support casualty evacuation operations after an attack on coalition forces in the Wardak Province of Afghanistan, when a "REDCON" call came in that two wounded Afghan National Army personnel needed to be picked up. The location was high in the Kuh-e-Nilu Mountains. Due to the nature of the injuries and the time, distance and elevation factors, it was going to require some quick and efficient planning.

Special Ops & Commandos Wipe 70 Terrorists From the Face of the Earth

NURISTAN, Afghanistan (September 17, 2011)  – Commandos killed an estimated 70 insurgents during clearing operations in Pol-e Rostam and Alwagal villages, Barg-e Matal district, Sept. 16.

The Commandos conducted the clearing operations to disrupt insurgent activity and demonstrate the Government of Afghanistan’s ability to place security forces into remote insurgent safe havens.

Members of 1st Commando Kandak, assisted by coalition Special Operations Forces (SOF), began their clearing operation in Pol-e Rostam by air assaulting into the targeted area.

RIP SFC Danial R Adams

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

     Sgt. 1st Class Danial R. Adams, 35, of Portland, Ore., died Sept. 13 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using mortar, machine-gun and small-arms fires.  He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Stuttgart, Germany.

Australian SAS to Run Airborne Training

The responsibility for maintaining the Airborne Insertion (Parachute) Capability has transfered from Army Forces Command to Special Operations Command.
The transfer marks a significant milestone in the history of Army’s parachute capability.
The Chief of Army, Lieutenant General David Morrison recognised that the Army has raised, developed and maintained a conventional parachute capability over the past 31 years. 
“I acknowledge the fine efforts of all those who have served as part of, and in support of the parachute capability,” Lieutenant General Morrison said.

31 Minute Workout to Honor 31 Fallen

KABUL, Afghanistan - The only requirement was to give your all— 31 minutes for 31 heroes. For the soldiers, airmen and civilians gathered at Kabul International Airport, Sept. 3, this physical training day left no room for the faint of heart.

Quitting wasn't an option in this memorial service that was unlike any other. The men and women at KAIA gathered to share their sweat and pain during a CrossFit workout, called '31 Heroes.'

They joined countless other CrossFit enthusiasts who, on this day, dedicated their workout to the 30 U.S. service members and one U.S. military working dog who made the ultimate sacrifice Aug.6, when their helicopter crashed during a mission in eastern Afghanistan.

All service members on board were killed, as well as seven Afghan commandos and one Afghan interpreter. It was the deadliest day for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since the war began in 2001.

The event, sponsored by the Navy SEAL Foundation, will serve as a “version of the ‘moment of silence’,” according to their website.

SpecOps and ANA Clear Nawa

Select members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) advised and assisted by coalition Special Operations Forces (SOF) conducted simultaneous clearing operations in the Nawa district, August 29.

During the operation, the combined elements found and destroyed over 2,700 kg of improvised explosive device materials, ammonium nitrate and ammonium nitrate aluminum, said an ANA team leader.

"We also detained two persons of interest regarding insurgent activity in the area," said the ANA team leader.
 

Charges Withdrawn Against Aussie Soldier

General Courts Martial relating to charges against Australian defence force members relating to the 12 February 2009 CIVILIAN CASUALTY Incident

A directions hearing convened by the Registrar of Military Justice in relation to the charges against the third Australian Defence Force member relating to an incident in Afghanistan on 12 February, 2009 was conducted, by telephone, on 29 August 2011.

The Director of Military Prosecutions applied formally to withdraw the charges before the Judge Advocate.  The Judge Advocate ordered that the charge sheet be withdrawn.

Airstrike Kills Insurgents Responsible for Downing of CH-47

KABUL, Afghanistan – Coalition forces killed the Taliban insurgents involved with the recent downing of the CH-47 helicopter, with a precision airstrike in Chak District, Wardak province, Aug 9.

The strike killed Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who fired the shot associated with the Aug. 6 downing of the CH-47 helicopter, which resulted in the deaths of 38 Afghan and coalition service members.

Mullah Mohibullah was a key facilitator in an insurgent attack cell led by Din Mohammad, a Taliban leader killed in a previous special operations mission. As a leader in Mohammad’s network in Tangi Valley, Mohibullah had as many as 12 Taliban fighters under his command, including potential suicide bombers.

Special Operations Mission Targeted Taliban Leader in Tangi Valley

KABUL, Afghanistan (Aug. 8, 2011) – Thirty eight coalition members were killed on August 6th when a coalition CH-47 crashed while on a mission that targeted a Taliban leader in the Tangi Valley, Sayyidabad district, Wardak province.

The helicopter was reportedly fired on by an insurgent rocket-propelled grenade while transporting the U.S. service members and commandos to the scene of an on-going engagement between ISAF and insurgents forces.

The U.S. service members on board included five aircrew and 25 personnel from the U.S. Special Operations Command.

The operation began as a security search for a Taliban leader responsible for insurgent operations in the nearby Tangi Valley.

Arriving at Camp Kunduz in mid May, soldiers from Task Force Guns, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, had their work cut out for them. The soldiers were tasked to convert an area of operations that was suited for a small platoon-sized element into one in which a battalion-sized element could thrive in.

“We anticipated austere conditions prior to getting out here, and austere conditions are exactly what we found,” said Lt. Col. Jeff White, commander, TF Guns, 1st ACB, originally from Boston.

URUZGAN, Afghanistan (August 7, 2011) – An Afghan National Army Special Forces medic advised and assisted by a coalition Special Operations Forces team medic, treated a trauma patient with life threatening injuries in Gizab, August 1.

The patient was brought to a coalition Special Operations Forces site in Gizab village after sustaining severe facial trauma during a motorcycle accident, according to an ANASF medic.

“There was not enough time for the patient to be rushed to the clinic [in Gizab], so we had to perform lifesaving treatment at the VSP [partnered Special Operations Forces site],” said an ANA SF medic.

WASHINGTON, July 26, 2011 – They are used to their deeds pass as unnoticed as their battlefield movements, but six Special Forces soldiers took the limelight here last night to receive a French military award roughly equivalent to the Silver Star.

Five National Guard soldiers and one on active duty were honored with the Croix de la Valeur Militaire – or French Cross of Military Valor -- in a private ceremony at the French ambassador’s residence attended by senior leaders including Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, Army chief of staff, and Army Maj. Gen. Timothy Kadavy, deputy director of the Army National Guard.

“I am deeply honored to … pay tribute to six most outstanding American soldiers from the United States Army and the Army National Guard who distinguished themselves while fighting the Taliban and al-Qaida elements in Afghanistan,” said French Ambassador François Delattre.

The Sun newspaper has reported on the readiness of the Special Boat Service (SBS) to protect the 2012 Olympics. With the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing competitions being held at Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, there are fears that terrorists may attempt a waterborne assault on the participants or spectators.

FORT HOOD, Texas -- When Staff Sgt. Benjamin Westrich won third place in the lightweight division at the 2011 U.S. Army Combatives Championship here July 23, it meant more to him than a plaque and a handshake. It meant much more for many people.

Westrich, an Individual Readiness Training instructor at Fort Carson, Colo., competed for Command Sgt. Maj. Frank Socha, the senior enlisted leader of the 10th Special Forces Group who has been battling late-stage lung cancer for more than a year.

The team provided medical care to nearly 700 people, mostly women and children in a small clinic named Kuk-Chenar, about six kilometers outside of Mangal village.

RIP MSG Benjamin A Stevenson

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. 

                Master Sgt. Benjamin A. Stevenson, 36, of Canyon Lake, Texas, died July 21 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.  He was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C

Commandos and Coalition Forces Apprehend Insurgent Facilitator

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan (July 19, 2011) – Members of 3rd Company, 5th Commando Kandak conducted a search and clearing operation which resulted in the detention of an insurgent facilitator in Mur Sheykh village, Aliabad district, July 16.

The Commandos, assisted by coalition Special Operations Forces, conducted these operations to disrupt a suspected improvised explosive devices and munitions cell.

During the search, the partnered force discovered an insurgent facilitator. The man was positively identified by other compound inhabitants and by a cast on his leg.

ANA Responds to Insurgent Attack, Results in Eight Enemy Deaths

GHAZNI, Afghanistan (July 13, 2011) – Members of the Afghan National Army responded to an insurgent attack, which resulted in eight enemy deaths, in Hasan Village, Gelan district, July 7.

The ANA Special Response Team, partnered with coalition Special Operations Forces, conducted a presence patrol to determine public opinions and conduct key leader engagements prior to embedding in a village stability platform.

After conducting a shura with village elders, the combined forces were attacked with indirect fire, small arms fire, mortars, and rocket propelled grenades. The forces were engaged by multiple groups of insurgents for more than six hours.

The opening of the new school marks the first time in eight years citizens in Manda village have had a functioning school for local children, according to Afghan provincial government officials.

Sergeant Todd Langley, 35, of Australia, died July 04, 2011, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with small arms fire in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to Special Operations Task Group, Australian Army.

War in Afghanistan News - 09 July 2011

Eight terrorists picked the wrong fight and found their hellish demise as a result.  They thought a SOF-Elder shura might be a good time to attack, but found Special Operations Forces as deadly when chaiing it up with the local leaders, as when out on the prowl for mis-behavers.

Having realized their complete impotence to pick a fight with Our Troops, the enemy dropped mortars on Afghan civilians, injuring 5 kids, a woman, and 3 civilian males.  Our Troops swooped in and evac'd the injured for medical care.

Additionally, 3 Talib Leaders and 8 Talib Thugs decided to surrender when faced with the opportunity for a battle with an armed opponent.  Two explosive caches and one explosive factory were destroyed in recent reports.

Special Forces Capture Insurgent Bomb Maker

URUZGAN, Afghanistan (July 6, 2011)- Afghan National Police and their Australian Special Forces partners have captured a prominent insurgent bomb maker and several associates in a targeted operation in Uruzgan’s Mirabad Valley.

On 2 July 2011, members of the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) partnered with the Provincial Response Company Uruzgan (PRC-U) conducted a cordon and search operation in a known insurgent area and detained nine individuals, one who was positively identified as a senior district level insurgent commander.

The Commanding Officer of the SOTG (who cannot be named for operational security reasons) said the detention of the insurgent commander would further disrupt the insurgency in southern Afghanistan.

07.04.2011 Story by Sgt. Lizette Hart KABUL PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of the 3rd Company, 1st Commando Kandak, conducted a unilateral cache recovery in Pol-e Charki City, Deh-e Sabz District, Kabul province, June 30.

The commandos recovered 13 anti-personnel mines.

The Kandak leadership believes these small scale operations will build the leadership attributes of the junior officers and non-commissioned officers, said a U.S. special operations forces team leader.

The Commando representative from the Ministry of Defense visited the Kandak to discuss future operations in Nuristan and Konar provinces. A SOF team leader stated it was nice to see the Ministry of Defense send a representative to the Kandak.

Village Elder Attacked by Insurgents for Aiding ANP and Coalition Forces

FARAH, Afghanistan (July 3, 2011)– A village elder was shot by insurgents for cooperating with the Afghan National Police (ANP) and Coalition Forces in the Nangabad village, Khake-Safed district, 29 June.

The village elder had been providing information to the ANP and U.S. Special Operations Forces about improvised explosive device locations and recent insurgent activities in the village.

After the attack, the village elders’ family called the ANP for support. The ANP and U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) responded to the call and secured the area, preventing further injuries and attacks.

KUNAR, Afghanistan (July 2, 2011)– Members of the 2nd Company, 1st Commando Kandak, conducted unilateral clearing operations which resulted in the recovery of a cache in Gambir village, Wataphur district, June 30.

The cache consisted of two bags of homemade explosive, which totaled roughly 50 pounds of calcium chlorate, and one full AK-47 rifle magazine.

What happens when you insert a group of Special Forces soldiers into a foreign country, put them on horseback, send them out against the Taliban? 

Horse Soldiers is about just such an operation.  It takes place in Afghanistan, shortly after 9/11.  These men, many who had barely ridden and some not at all, formed teams and rode out with members of the Northern Alliance to fight the Taliban.  Days would go by with little or no food, drinking water from ditches when it could be found.  The soldiers of the Northern Alliance were running out of bullets but never lacked in spirit when it came to fighting from horseback or on foot.  The Americans shocked the Taliban with their high-tech weapons, calling in air strikes to back up their unique style of fighting. 

"It's as if the Jetsons had met the Flinstones," Special Forces soldier Ben Milo told the author.

Two district level insurgent commanders killed by Special Forces

Afghan National Police and their Australian Special Forces partners have killed four insurgents, including two district level commanders, during an operation in Uruzgan on 24 June 2011.

The insurgent commanders, Mullah Ghulam and Mullah Gharfour, were killed by members of the Provincial Response Company - Uruzgan (PRC-U) and the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) during an exchange of fire in the Shahid-e Hasas district.

The Commanding Officer of the SOTG (who cannot be named for operational security reasons) said the removal of these insurgent commanders will have an immediate and significant effect on the ability for insurgents to operate in northern and western Uruzgan.

Senators Quiz McRaven For Top Special Operations Slot

WASHINGTON, June 28, 2011 - Navy Vice Adm. William H. McRaven appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee today as the senators met to consider his promotion to the rank of admiral and appointment as commander of U.S. Special Operations Command.

McRaven currently commands Joint Special Operations Command. His previous assignments include service commanding Special Operations Command Europe, Naval Special Warfare Group 1 and SEAL Team 3.

War In Afghanistan News 28 June 2011

War in Afghanistan News reports provided by ISAF Joint Command. Operations are reported in the following provinces:  Uruzgan, Zabul, Helmand and Kunduz.

Afghan Local Police in the Nawbahar district of Zabul province helped a combined team of Afghan and coalition Special Operations Forces reduce a series of pressure plate improvised explosive devices emplaced along a road, June 21.

The PPIEDs were located near Pinzo checkpoint, which was established recently by Nawbahar district police officials after a recent class of ALP members graduated from their training course, according to a district police commander.

After discovering the explosives buried just under the surface of a gravel road, ALP personnel notified a combined team of Afghan and coalition Special Operations forces who were returning from a patrol in the area, according to an ALP checkpoint commander.

A coalition Special Operations team leader said a combined Explosive Ordnance Disposal team indentified and detonated the PPIED, with the assistance of ALP.

ZABUL, Afghanistan (June 26, 2011) – A combined team of Afghan Commandos, Afghan National Police, and coalition Special Operations Forces completed an operation in the Deh Chopan district June 24, leading to eight insurgents killed and numerous weapons caches destroyed.
