Rich Hall's 'The Dirty South' (presenter Rich Hall)

Your comments

Wonderful. Rich Hall was insightful, amusing as ever and managed to put a different slant on accepted views and values. One of the best programmes I have seen in many a long year.

Simon Bell, Guildford

I loved this show: funny, scathing, passionate. Rich Hall is a great presenter and a fresh and original voice. A perfect antidote to the blandness of much modern broadcasting.

Suzanne, Bristol

I just want to say how much I loved last night's show The Dirty South. Could have done without the swearing, but being a displaced American, the presentation, the archives, the history, was brilliant. Pace kept getting better, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Please more of this type, and makes me now know why I pay for my TV license.

Lisa Benefdel, London

One that deserves a wider audience. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a documentary so much. I don't know how much you're paying Rich Hall, but it's not enough.

P. Alcorn, Glasgow

Brilliant! An acerbic talking head and no tricksy graphics.

Bob Towers, Hamilton

I really loved this programme: it was funny and insightful, sceptical about all the well-worn stereotypes and compassionate - just a perfect treat in every way. The previous Rich Hall programme about the Western genre was great too, I hope there are more like this to come.

R Walsh, London

Rich Hall's 'Dirty South' was superb. So many facts and each one put into context with quickfire wit. More like this would be very welcome.

Peter Donovan, Banbury, Oxon

Well done to the BBC and Rich Hall for making such an entertaining 90 minutes. I have never before been so delighted by a programme that I have contacted anyone let alone the BBC.
Rich was a breath of fresh air and his obvious passion for the subject shone through. I was so taken by some of his comments that I actually did some searching on the net to find out more, and I now know who Carl Perkins was :)
Well done Rich, please make more shows of this type. Your no-nonsense attitude and occsional use of harsh language was absolutely spot on.

Dave Wilson, Coventry

Rich Hall's 'Dirty South' was superb. So many facts and each one put into context with quickfire wit. More like this would be very welcome.

Peter Donovan, Banbury, Oxon

Can Rich Hall be coaxed to produce more of the same? Absolutely enjoyable programme ... although, in deference to my name, he might have called it other than "The Dirty", but no offence taken!

Colin South, Portsmouth

The programme started well, but slid gradually into vulgarity. The profanity used by the presenter added absolutely nothing to the script and did no service to the culture he was supposedly trying to prove was not as illiterate and de-evolved as the stereotypes say. I expected better of BBC Four.

Anna, Seville, Spain

As a semi-professional Southerner (and Hall's fellow Tar Heel), I started out suspicious, but this was remarkably good. I don't know where Hall got the idea that Mark Twain was a Yankee, and I wish he wouldn't say "AppaLAYCHia." (That's what they say in ManHAYttan. We hillbillies call our part of the country "AppaLATCHia.") But if that's all I can find to complain about in a 90-minute programme about the South, someone did a great job.

John Shelton Reed, Cambridge

We visit the 'Dirty South' every year and this programme said it all! We loved it and will have more insight next time we go! Excellent TV, more of this type of programme and of Rich Hall please.

Patricia Armer, Appleby

Brilliant, absorbing and extremely amusing as only Rich can be. Maybe it should be added to studied "texts" at school. It gives an insight into another familiar but unknown culture.

Beresford du-Cille, West Bromwich

Intelligent, amusing and informative. Rich Hall is a great find as a presenter: knowledgeable, passionate, with his trademark good-natured, aggressive humour.

Eddie J, Birmingham

A very well made and excellently presented programme. A rare combination of amusing and informative with some very concise (and eye opening) points.

Gordon, Manchester

I really enjoyed this programme. I loved his passion for the area and was shocked to realise how my view of the area was based on Hollywood's representation of the South. Please keep making programmes like this, I appreciated being challenged, as well as Rich's passion for the South and showing what it has brought to the world. Very funny too.

James, Norwich

Raw, intelligent and witty - typical of Rich Hall's unique style. A substantial programme of both length and content tucked away in the expanse of lightweight summer TV viewing.

J Hooper, Bexley, Kent

Brilliant! Rich Hall managed to be hilarious, informative, passionate and scathing all at once. I loved the programme and I love Rich Hall as a comedian and as a presenter. He's raw, rough but you can hear the passion and conviction in him. I didn't mind the swearing at all. He can present more programmes in future! I admit I wanted to watch it because I like Rich Hall and I wasn't particularly interested in the Deep South before seeing the documentary. I was interested to see what Rich Hall had to say about that part of the USA. However I was really engrossed in the programme, the archives and insights into that part of the world, along with Rich Hall's typical humour! But the humour added to it, it didn't take anything away from some of the more serious points, such as the civil Rights Movement etc. Hugely interesting, hugely entertaining. BBC Four is my favourite channel.

Sarah C, Northampton

Excellent. Perceptive, witty, laugh-out-loud funny, but balanced, informative, and in perspective. I learned and enjoyed a great deal. Television broadcasting at its best. Thank you Rich Hall. Thank you BBC.
