Mass media campaign to reduce HIV infection among youth in Vietnam

Vietnam

TV spot on HIV awareness

We are working as advisors to the Vietnamese government, Vietnam Television (VTV) and provincial radio stations to run a national mass media campaign to raise awareness of the risk of HIV infection among young people, and to change attitudes towards people living with HIV and AIDS.

Start date: 2007
End date: 2010
Media types: radio, television, documentary films, print, internet, journalism training
Issue: health
Country: Vietnam

The campaign uses television, radio, print and the internet to promote HIV prevention messages among 15-24 year olds, particularly by challenging the stigma associated with condoms, to encourage 15-24 year olds to talk openly about sex and come forward for HIV testing and counselling. It is part of a much larger initiative to stop the spread of HIV in Vietnam, headed by the Government of Vietnam's Ministry of Health.

The campaign aims to change sexual behaviour and cultural and traditional attitudes to sex, drug use and risk perception in Vietnam.

Television drama

A 52-part TV drama series House with Many Windows has been broadcast twice per week on national, prime time television by VTV from September to November 2008, and is now being repeated on a variety of other channels including the 15 provincial partner stations. Audience research on the series has shown a high level of appreciation and understanding of the HIV messaging in the series. A second series with a different format aimed at attracting even larger audience numbers is in development and will be broadcast in the second half of 2009.

Radio phone-in programmes

Live radio phone-in programmes are being broadcast in 14 of the project's 15 provinces, with the final station going on air in December 2008. The programmes are providing a forum for young people to ask questions and discuss HIV, sexual health and a wide range of youth issues. Live phone-ins with a direct link to the audience are a new format in Vietnam and have already proven tremendously popular with the project's target audiences. Some of the stations have presenters as young as 16 years old.

TV and radio adverts, and more....

Our team is also supporting the production of 50 different public service announcements (television and radio) covering the project's five main themes. These have been on air on various channels since October 2008 and will run continuously until 2011. Documentary films are also being produced, presented by young Vietnamese hip hop artists, and a wide range of complementary print materials have been created for use by other project partners.
All of the outputs mentioned above can be accessed via the project's website www.hoanhiptim.vn, for which the BBC World Service Trust team also acts as advisors.

Partnerships

We are working in partnership with the Vietnam Government's Ministry of Health, the Vietnam Television Film Company (TV drama), Digisun Media (TV adverts), CIS (website), and 15 provincial radio and TV stations.
