Production

Internews has been producing groundbreaking television programs since its formation in 1982, when it pioneered the “spacebridge” format—live, satellite-linked dialogues between the United States and the erstwhile Soviet Union. In the 1990s, Internews turned its focus to the support of the independent media struggling to take hold in the emerging democracies of the world. As a result, while continuing to create some original programming in-house, we have since concentrated more on supporting and coordinating television and radio production by local producers.

Our television and radio programs have three main goals: to strengthen the independent media sector; to bridge the conflicts between nations and peoples; and to provide crucial information to people in times of humanitarian crises.

Some of the programs Internews has produced around the world include “Meri Awaz Suno” (“Hear My Voice”), the first radio program produced by and about women in Pakistan; “Da Pulay Poray” (“On the Borderline”), a radio program targeted to the population on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan; “Peuneugah Aceh” (“News from Aceh”), a radio program focusing on Aceh’s rehabilitation and reconstruction after the 2004 tsunami; “Jazba A Tameer” (“Desire to Rebuild”), a radio program providing information to survivors of the 2005 Pakistan earthquake; and "Salaam Watandar," a news program distributed to a network of independent radio stations in Afghanistan.

Internews has helped to develop 45 broadcast networks to enable shared programming and news exchange and allow members to create joint marketing efforts, strengthening financial viability.

"After eight years of not listening to any radio or TV program, since I was involved in Tabligh work (a religious preaching movement), for the first time I have tuned into the electronic media due to this program. It is a very interesting and informative program and I really like the contents of the program and all the reports. We need to discuss all the issues which are relevant to our life and society in the media."
