Africa Cast: Unlocking the Potential of African TV through Digital Transformation

Internews' Media Innovation Advisor from the Africa Region, Anahi Ayala Iacucci, is participating in Africa Cast, a business-focused conference examining the growing opportunities in Africa’s TV market, including the evolution of the communications, media and TV ecosystem and the role of new players in the market; understanding the new business models and services enabled by new technologies and regulation; and assessing how the improvement of network capacity will affect the provision TV services.

Iacucci will be on the panel - Case study: Focusing on the Role of Local Radio Stations and their Connection with Mobile Phones and Social Media for Development - discussing the possibilities and future development of ICTs for local media.

Silicon Valley Human Rights Conference

Kathleen Reen, VP for Asia and New Media Programs with Internews, is a speaker at the Silicon Valley Human Rights Conference, taking place October 25-26 at the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco, CA. The conference is examining and exploring how the high-tech industry can better plan for and manage the human rights implications of their technologies. (More information)

Challenges for Independent Media in a Post-Gaddafi Libya

The Center for International Media Assistance and the Middle East and North Africa Program at the National Endowment for Democracy are holding a panel discussion on prospects for independent media in Libya after the February 17 revolution. Jamal Dajani, Vice President of Middle East, North Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean at Internews, will be one of the speakers.

The uprising has created a major shift in Libyan politics and society, with a proliferation of news outlets in print, broadcast, and digital media. These initiatives, however, are nascent, fluid, and operating in an extremely high-pressure environment. The panelists will address these issues and identify the most pressing needs and challenges for Libya's emerging media. (More)

M4Data: Beyond Mobile Security

As more and more people recognize the power of the connections that new technologies, and especially mobile phones, facilitate, there has been an increasing amount of concern. These concerns range from the safety of people using these technologies to the quality of the information traveling through mobile and Internet systems.

This event focuses on the ways that people can design programs, their own behavior, and the information they send to reduce risks to themselves and their programs.

The event is organized by Internews, FrontlineSMS, and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies Africa Program. Speakers include Jon Gosier, metaLayer, Inc.; Paul Goodman, Development Seed; Sean Martin McDonald, FrontlineSMS; Kristen Batch, Internews (moderator).

Lessons from Other Transitions: Challenges for Independent Media in Europe and Eurasia

Josh Machleder, Internews' vice president for Europe and Eurasia programs, will participate in a roundtable discussion to examine lessons learned by the media development community in Europe and Eurasia, hosted by the Center for International Media Assistance. The event is being held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the IREX Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia, which analyzes the strength and viability of the independent media sector in 21 countries. The panelists will explore progress and decline in the media landscape in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, and Ukraine, among other countries in the region, after major political, social, and economic transformation.   • Imogen Wall, independent humanitarian consultant and author of a report commissioned by infoasaid on beneficiary communication practices in Haiti: Haiti 2010: the communication challenge in earthquake, cholera and hurricane response (forthcoming).
  • Jennifer Mandel, PhD, Internews’ Deputy Country Director and Research Director in Haiti. Mandel was part of the initial response team to the Haiti January 2010 earthquake and will speak about: ‘Research on the Impact of Cholera Communication Campaigns in Haiti’

Informing the Dialogue and Creating a Roadmap: Workshop in Comparative Media Law, Policy and Regulation in the MENA Region

This workshop will bring together key stakeholders from the academic, law and policy and civil society communities.  Led by Internews, in collaboration with the Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, and the Center for Media and Communication Studies, Central European University, this two-day event will bring individuals from Egypt, Tunisia and other countries in the MENA region in discussion with regional experts and facilitators who have had experience with transitions elsewhere.

This will be an exploratory discussion bringing together a small group of participants from the MENA region with international experts. The method will be to take current developments, particularly in Tunisia and Egypt, as a way of asking how best information can be gathered, coalitions can be built, and expertise can be mustered to foster a strong media sector that will undergird democratic development and meaningful reform.

The CEU Summer University announces the course: Communication Policy Advocacy, Technology, and Online Freedom of Expression: a Toolkit for Media Development.

This intensive summer course is designed to help both researchers and activists gain new insights into the role which civil society can play in advocating for free expression online and communication policy change. Sessions will highlight the potential of technology and online tools for mobilizing and organizing constituencies and for enhancing the security and privacy of advocates. Participants will be exposed to a wide range of practical and theoretical views related to communication policy advocacy and online tools and tactics, and learn how to integrate research into communication policy advocacy.
