Deir ez Zor Live Blog

A local activist of the Local Co-ordination Committees network in eastern Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, said a protest of about 8,000 people had taken place in the city’s Jabellah neighbourhood, despite the continued presence of the military.

Security forces had opened fire injuring five people, one of them seriously, he said, while a protest had also taken place in Albu Kamal on the border with Iraq.

This video appears to show protestors in Deir ez-Zor coming under fire today.

These photographs show Syrian army troops withdrawing from the Deir ez-Zor. Arab and foreign correspondents were taken to the city to report the army withdrawal which the government says has restored normalcy after arresting a big number of gunmen. But activists and winesses have said that troops remain in the city. [Images by EPA]
