The White House on Tuesday welcomed an Israeli-Palestinian prisoner swap and the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, voicing hope for renewed peace talks.

"We are pleased that Gilad Shalit is being reunited with his family," said spokesman Jay Carney, traveling with the president in North Carolina.

"As regards to the overall Mideast peace process for us it's always about each side taking steps that make it easier to return to negotiations instead of harder.

"Each side needs to take steps to return to negotiations."

Noam Shalit, Gilad's father, tells reporters that his son "feels well" but that he "suffers some injuries as a result of inadequate treatment". He has some shrapnel wounds and suffers some maladies due to his lack of exposure from the sun.

"He could not communicate with others, especially in his own language," he added.

Shalit said he hoped his son would soon return to "normal life" and that the family has experience Gilad's "rebirth".

Hamas leader, Ismail Haniya, speaking to a jubilant crowd at Gaza City, said that that the prisoner swap is a "source of dignity" for Palestinians and "other resistance factions."

He also said that the Israaelis, who looked for Shalit for 5 years, were "defeated".

Shalit was taken to his home, the northern Israeli village of Mitzpe Hila, via helicoper, where crowds of people carrying white roses and carnations met the covory carrying the newly-released 25-year-old and his family, reports the AFP.

The AFP reports that the first public glimpses of Gilad Shalit revealed a "a thin, confused looking figure":

The footage, which was broadcast by Egyptian state TV, was taken shortly after Shalit was transferred from Gaza to Egypt and showed him looking dazed as he was briskly led towards the Israeli frontier in the first images of him since his capture on June 25, 2006.
