In the Democratic Republic of Congo, campaigning for Monday's national elections is drawing to a close.

One of the candidates running for a seat in the country's national assembly is Ntabo Ntaberi Sheka, a rebel group leader who has been formally charged with crimes against humanity over his alleged involvement in the mass rapes of 387 people in 2010.

But as Sheka staged his only campaign rally in the Walikale district of the North Kivu province, he told Al Jazeera he was only defending his people.

In this Al Jazeera exclusive, Sheka spoke to Al Jazeera's Peter Greste in Walikale.
