Messi, Ronaldo and Xavi Shortlisted for FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011
Last year's FIFA World Player Lionel Messi (Argentina), his team-mate in the Spanish club Barcelona club Xavi (Spain), and Real Madrid's Portuguese international, Cristiano Ronaldo, have been shortlisted for the 2011 FIFA Ballon d'Or FIFA France Football announced Monday at a press conference held at the headquarters of France Football magazine in Paris.

One of the best footballers ever to don the jersey of the Brazil national football team, Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, otherwise known as just Socrates, died Sunday aged 57 of a gut infection.

London to Stage 2017 World Athletics Championships
The International Atheltics Federation, IAAF, has chosen London to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships, five years after organising the 2012 Olympic Games. London won the vote over Doha for the right to stage the global showpiece for the first time, thus fulfilling a promise of a legacy for track and field. London and Doha were the only candidates for the 2017 showpiece.

The Commonwealth Games Federation has chosen Australia's Gold Coast to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The vote went in its favour by a 43-27 margin over its only rival, the Sri Lankan city of Hambantota.
