Housing Information

As you prepare for your arrival at Georgetown, your biggest question may be where and how to find housing in the Washington, D.C. area. Although looking for housing can be a daunting challenge, a little research and planning can go a long way in easing your search. Below is helpful information on housing search resources for incoming students, local neighborhoods, and how the department can aid you in a roommate search.

The University offers various resources for your housing search. Georgetown University’s Off-Campus Housing Resource Service (OCHRS) maintains a website which includes a listing of available off-campus housing and which offers insight as to renting housing in Washington. The information provided on the OCHRS website is most helpful, and it will familiarize yourself with what to expect and the neighborhoods in which you may be interested. Once you arrive in Washington, you may visit OCHRS which offers (a) several computers and printers to search for and print housing vacancies and (b) numerous phone lines to call prospective landlords and schedule appointments to view properties.

Beyond resources provided by the University, other excellent local sources include:

A studio, an efficiency, a shared room in a group house, or a one-bedroom apartment may range in cost from $1,000-1,600 per month. Therefore, many students opt to share an apartment or house with one or more roommates. For a list of neighborhoods you may want to consider, you should refer to the OCHRS website, which provides a comprehensive list of neighborhoods with details about each.

If you do not have a car and do not plan to live very close to campus, you may want to target your search to places near the Georgetown University Transportation Service (GUTS) shuttle line. GUTS regularly runs five shuttles connecting the campus to the Georgetown University Law Center on Capitol Hill, to University offices on Wisconsin Avenue, to Metro stations at Rosslyn (Virginia) and Dupont Circle (District of Columbia) and to stops in North Arlington, Virginia.

As your arrival date approaches, you may want to create an advertisement for a roommate/apartment, which we will post around the department for you. If you have a chance to visit the area before settling in Washington, we encourage you to stop by the department and talk to some of our graduate students about available housing opportunities. Of course, our current graduate students will be of great assistance in your search as well. You will find they have many helpful tips and much advice on how to search for and find affordable and safe places to live in the Washington area.

Finally, as a cautionary note, you should be prepared to pay a security deposit when you sign your lease. This amount varies from property to property and may range from $500 to the equivalent of two months’ worth of rent.

Good luck with your search! Please do not hesitate to email us at chemad@georgetown.edu with any questions or concerns you may have about finding a new home in Washington, D.C. We are more than happy to help.
