Shane Warne has burnt his bowling fingers to put his comeback in doubt.

The legendary Australia leg-spinner, 42, posted pictures of his damaged hand on Twitter.

He also appealed for help to speed up his recovery in time to play for Melbourne Stars against Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League on Saturday.

"Not ideal preparation for practice match today - burning the bowling hand. Get better quickly please, any suggestions - HELP," Warne tweeted.

Warne retired from international cricket after helping Australia to a 5-0 Ashes series victory over England in early 2007.

PS no more trying to be a master chef! Stop and buy a bacon roll on the way to the ground next time - silly Shane!

He took 708 wickets in 145 Tests during a 15-year career for Australia, a tally bettered only by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan.

Warne continued to play Twenty20 cricket but retired in May after leading Rajasthan Royals in the first four seasons of the Indian Premier League.

However, he decided to return with the Stars, one of two Melbourne franchises in Australia's revamped T20 competition.

He said he wanted his three children to see him at work and it was an "added bonus" that his British fiancee, actress Elizabeth Hurley, would also be there.

Melbourne are confident he will be fit and Warne tweeted later: "PS no more trying to be a master chef! Stop and buy a bacon roll on the way to the ground next time - silly Shane!"
