Training
Internews trains over 9,000 media professionals each year. Training
is an essential part of our work supporting independent media and
access to information around the world.
Internews has trained media professionals in all aspects of journalism,
production, and management. Internews training programs are always
tailored to the local situation, and they feature extensive hands-on
learning. Training takes several forms: traditional seminars; internships;
on-site residencies at TV or radio stations by international and Internews-trained
local professionals; and journalism schools.
Some Internews training programs cover the nuts and bolts of journalism,
such as how to report unbiased news; how to produce interesting
and technically professional radio and television programs; or how to
run a station as a financially viable business. For more advanced students,
Internews offers training in topics such as computer graphics, media
law, and investigative journalism.
Other Internews’ training programs are focused on covering specific
issues. Local Voices trains African journalists
to produce high-quality, locally-relevant coverage of HIV/AIDS.
Internews Europe's project, Turnaround Time, does the same in Southeast
Asia.Internews began training journalists in Southeast
Asia and other countries how to responsibly cover avian flu. The
Earth Journalism Network was started by Internews to empower and
enable journalists from developing countries to cover the environment
more effectively.
With funding from USAID, Internews started the International
Journalism and Media Management Training Program at Western Kentucky
University that has trained journalists and managers from Indonesia,
Cambodia, Jordan and Egypt in the skills needed to create sustainable
media outlets that provide unbiased, credible news.
Election Support
Free media are essential to democratic elections, as citizens must
have adequate information to make informed choices. For over a decade,
Internews has been working around the world training journalists to report
on campaigns and elections, helping stations to organize televised debates,
monitoring the media for political coverage, and producing programming
about elections and the electoral process. Internews emphasizes the role
of independent media in maintaining transparent elections and in holding
elected officials accountable for their decisions.
