Baptism Site revenues drop by 30%

AMMAN — Religious tourism revenues at the Baptism Site dropped by 30 per cent this year, amounting to JD1.1 million, according to Baptism Site Commission Director Dia Madani, who attributed the drop to regional instability.

He said a large number of Russian pilgrims are expected to visit the site next year, particularly as the Russian government has completed building an Orthodox church and a guest house at the site at a cost of JD40 million.

US pilgrims represent the largest proportion of pilgrims visiting the religious site, followed by European, Russians and Arabs.

The Baptism Site, also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan and Al Maghtas in Arabic, is the site where Jesus Christ was baptised by John the Baptist.
