AMMAN — The Jordan Press Association (JPA) council on Saturday criticised the manner in which journalist Samih Maaytah was asked to resign as editor-in-chief of Al Rai.

In a statement sent to The Jordan Times, JPA Spokesperson Ikhlas Qadi expressed the council’s dissatisfaction after Maaytah was requested to submit his resignation a few months after he was appointed.

The council voiced concern over continued government intervention in the media.

Stressing the importance of professional independence for media outlets, the JPA council emphasised that the Social Security Corporation should relinquish any shares it holds in press establishments, in order to guarantee their independence in keeping with the calls for reform.
