Last week, I bowed to the inevitable and chose the warm embrace of insanity. After watching the EU fiddle while the union burns and the strange atmosphere in Brussels as people ‘Keep calm and carry on’ as though nothing was happening, as though their precious was just tickety-boo, insanity seemed to be the sensible option.

There’s always been something surreal about hosting the EU in Belgium, but the last year has not only seen the gradual build up of what can only be called a psychosis, it has also revealed the EU as being the empire with no clothes. This is about to get even weirder.

I was, very briefly, cheered by the news that a technocratic Frankfurt group was to take over the EU, at least until I remembered that Kraftwerk came from Dusseldorf. If nothing else, the arrival of Florian Schneider and friends could mean replacing the turgid ‘Ode to Joy’ with something better, probably ‘Europe Endless...

Well, I don’t know how they did it, but the UK Conservatives have found a replacement for Roger Helmer who seems to be even more bonkers than the proto-UKIP MEP. Joining Brussels in January next year is Rupert Matthews, who manages to be a Eurosceptic, but not sceptical at all when it comes to the existence of bigfoot, aliens at Roswell...
