NEWPORT BEACH – A year ago, Egyptians of all ages and religions took to the streets and, in just 18 days of relatively peaceful protests, removed a regime that had ruled over them with an iron fist for 30 years. Empowered by an impressive yet leaderless movement – largely of young people – the country’s citizens overcame decades of fear to reclaim a voice in their future.

LONDON - George Osborne's efforts two weeks ago to try and establish London as the Western centre for the trading of the Chinese currency should be congratulated however, some of the headlines seemed to get a little enthusiastic over something which is going to be a far slower burn than a Chinese firework.

On 18 January 2012, the Swiss Federal Council approved the Dispatch to Parliament on the deployment of the Swiss Armed Forces to protect the Swiss Embassy in Tripoli. A detachment has been deployed for a period of six months, taking over this task from a private security company.

On 7 January, a Danish warship freed nine Pakistanis and five Iranians off the Somali coast after intercepting an Iranian dhow used by pirates as a mothership from which to launch attacks.

The NGO Monitor released an analysis of the Human Rights Watch (HRW) work in 2011, revealing some rather alarming statistics and producing some serious accusations. Monitor focussed on HRW's reporting on Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with a special emphasis on the Arab-Israeli conflict and the role of the HRW in Libya.

New Europe: How did you enjoy your time in Durban?
Oreste Rossi: At first it was an important experience, because you could meet many delegations that you would hardly ever meet in other . We met, for example, the Chinese parliamentary delegation, the Pan African delegation as well as the French and European agencies' delegates; it was extremely interesting.
