At least 10 people were killed and 13 were arrested on Tuesday as a result of unrest in Algeria. In the city of Laghouat in the central part of the country there were demonstrations by large portions of the population protesting against unemployment.

Ten years ago in Algeria the unemployment rate for the young was approximately 50%. Now the unemployment rate has fallen but is still high with every one in five young Algerians having no steady income.

In a country where the oil and gas industries are the largest many young people make their living smuggling contraband.
