A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale occurred on Wednesday night off the coast of Indonesia according to a statement on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website.

According to seismologists, the epicenter of the quake was located 420 km south-west of Banda Aceh on the island of Sumatra at a depth of 29 kilometers.
