Researchers are hoping to find out. A clinical trial is under way to see if cord blood stem cells are safe and can restore the hearing of children who were born hearing, but then lost hearing. To be eligible for the study, the hearing must have been lost via a non-syndromic cause such as meningitis. The trial is supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
