Yesterday, Brandon McInerney, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for shooting gay 15-year-old, Lawrence (Larry) King to death in their middle school in 2008. At the time of the shooting McInerney was a 14-year-old 8th grader.
McInerney was originally charged with murder as a hate crime, but that trial ended in a hung jury, with jurors split between convicting him of voluntary manslaughter and first-degree murder.
The LA Times reports,
"During the first trial, prosecutors portrayed McInerney as a budding white supremacist who hated homosexuals and was enraged by King's sexuality and aggressive flirtations. The defense argued that McInerney was the product of a violent and dysfunctional home and had reached an emotional breaking point in response to King's advances."
As a result of the mistrial, McInerney accepted a plea deal with will result in a 21 year prison sentence without time off for good behavior.
What do you think of the sentence? Is it fair?
