How Do You Get Rid of Test Anxiety?

Tuesday February 7, 2012

crazyThose of you taking the LSAT, ACT or TOEIC this weekend are probably dealing with those butterflies in your stomach right about now. You know you have something important to do, so your body sends little surges of adrenaline coursing through your veins. Your heart rate goes up. Your legs start to bounce. You may even lie awake at night desperately flipping your pillow over to the cool side again and again, trying to get to sleep.

No, I haven't been stalking you. Most of us face anxiety when it comes to testing, so I'm just kinda guessing that you're in the same boat.

When it comes to test-taking, adrenaline can either be your best buddy or your worst foe. It can cause you to second-guess yourself, or it can help you focus your mind to get the best answers. You can feel jittery and strange, or you can sit focused and relaxed. The key is mastering that adrenaline coursing through your body. You want to quell it enough so you can use it!

Wanna know how?

Sure you do.

Exercising, of course, is one of THE BEST ways to rid yourself of extra adrenaline. Prior to your test, it would serve you really well to go for a quick run, take a long walk, lift some weights, or ride a bike. It'll calm your nerves and help you focus on the content of the test vs. your ever-loving pounding heart.

If you run out of time, though, and need to calm yourself mentally right before you test, then there are several things you can do to get rid of your stress so you can get a great score like focusing on positive imagery and repeating an uplifting phrase.

Wanna know the specifics? Check out these ways to overcome test anxiety.

And students, if you're registered or will soon be registered for the ACT, SAT or TOEFL, be sure to check out my College Week Live Seminar this Thursday at 7:00 PM EST. I'll be instructing you in the best ways to combat test anxiety, and giving you the low-down on registration and scores, too.
