The FP Top 100 Global Thinkers

Foreign Policy presents a unique portrait of 2011's global marketplace of ideas and the thinkers who make them.

DECEMBER 2011

The headlines may be gloomy: a seemingly endless war in Afghanistan, famine in Somalia, a bloody crackdown in Syria. But Steven Pinker doesn't fret over the dismal news. In his ambitious new book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, the Harvard University–based cognitive researcher argues that the world is a significantly more peaceful place than it was in centuries past.

For More

A History of (Non)Violence
Steven Pinker on why humans are becoming more peaceful.

Pinker makes the case that the worst examples of human cruelty -- torture, war, suicide -- have declined dramatically in the modern age. Why? He contends that humankind has gradually tamed its worst instincts as traits like empathy and equality have proved more useful than violence and revenge, an insight as relevant to geopolitical strategists as criminologists the world over.

And Pinker suggests the trend toward a more peaceful planet is accelerating, beginning with the "Long Peace" that followed World War II and gaining momentum with the "New Peace" that followed the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. So, cheer up, he writes: "for all the troubles that remain in the world, the decline of violence is an accomplishment that we can savor."

Muse Statisticians.
Stimulus or austerity? I don't have an opinion on everything.
America or China? America.
Arab Spring or Arab Winter? Springier.
Reading list Winning the War on War, by Joshua S. Goldstein; Getting Better, by Charles Kenny; The Great Big Book of Horrible Things, by Matthew White.
Best idea Joshua Goldstein: If you want peace, work for peace.
Worst idea The United States' funding only the parts of the U.N. that advance American interests.

In 2003, British-born Andrew Sullivan, who is HIV-positive, was prohibited from becoming a U.S. permanent resident and denied the right to marry his same-sex partner. Eight years and two policy changes later, the writer and husband is a permanent resident of the United States, using his explosively popular blog, now hosted by the Daily Beast, to exhort his adopted country to extend marriage rights to all its citizens -- a cause that seemed astonishingly more achievable in 2011 than even Sullivan could have imagined until recently.

A self-proclaimed conservative, Sullivan argues against those who label him a liberal for his support of gay rights and decries the religious bias of modern right-wing politics. His ability to glide between political ideologies has made him a lightning rod for criticism, but also the rare figure in contemporary politics who can reach audiences across the political spectrum.

Meanwhile, his most fundamental cause, same-sex marriage, is undergoing a remarkable boost in popular acceptance, with the president admitting that his views, once opposed, are "evolving," and a majority of the country supporting it for the first time, a 9 percentage-point leap from last year. Sullivan, who has been punditizing for same-sex marriage since the early 1990s and wrote a major Newsweek cover story about his own marriage after New York's decision to legalize this summer, is justified in lifting a glass of Champagne. "[In] the years of struggle, as more and more heterosexuals joined us, we all began finally to see that this was not really about being gay. It was about being human," he writes.

Muse Thomas Merton.
Stimulus or austerity? Stimulus now; Bowles-Simpson–style austerity later.
America or China? China.
Arab Spring or Arab Winter? Spring.
Reading list The Rogue, by Joe McGinniss; The Better Angels of Our Nature, by Steven Pinker; The Settlers, by Gadi Taub.
Best idea Bowles-Simpson's deficit plan.
Worst idea Foreign policy based on theology, as in Rick Perry's "easy" position on Israel.

Mountain100- El Baradei

Dear Mountain 100,
Do you live on Planet "Deliverance"??

A sad comment that reflects total ignorance of who El Baradei was and is. Kindly read up on the role that he played in the Iraq war. Not only did he not lie or design the war on Iraq , but he consistently stated that no weapons of mass destruction existed in Iraq that would warrant an attack much less a war. We all later learned that he was stating the truth and GW Bush and his cronies were the liars and designers of this war. When he was up for reelection at the IAEA , the US did not vote for him because he stood up against us and would not agree to the falsity of WOMD. The ignorance conveyed in your comments is what paves the way for meaningless wars and elects leaderless presidents. Kindly read anything before commenting. Perhaps the next time you attempt at voicing your opinion , it will be based on any truth.

If there is a thinker that everybody agrees that he should be on the top of the list is the Tunisian who set himself on fire (Mohammed Bouazizi). That person should be considered as the strongest thinker, insurance to his nation's future. He did not write a book because he is not educated. In addition, millions of books have been written but they have never been effective and many people either don't read them or don’t understand their profound meanings, all they do is make handmade jewelry there. The Tunisian citizen -Mohammed Bouazizi- acted decisively and effectively. He changed the entire Arab world. Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, etc.....

I don't even understand how come Arundhati Roy is in this list in the first place. She does have a good CV, but the kind of work for which you seem to have included her (going by your write-up) is nothing substantial. Just making a few hard statements about the Indian Govt and the right-wingers does not make one a global thinker. For example, Gautam Navlakha's work and essays about Maoists and Kashmir are much more insightful than hers. Another person who could have been a much better choice than her would be Binayak Sen. What has she done apart from making statements and selling insurance to local villagers... nothing...

It's as if you you quickly browsed through a few highly publicised (but not the most important) news pieces about them. You just seemed to have picked up some overblown and sensational pieces in the Indian media about them.

And, I don't even understand how come Arundhati Roy is in this list in the first place. thinkers...?

Perhaps the keyword here is "thinkers." To "think" is not the same as to "do" nor to "do well" or to "do for the greater good." Can there be no presumption of moral certitude or betterment, conception and judgement. If the measure is to merely "think" then what can be said of the result of all of this "thinking?" To be sure, it can be contrasted with the lack of thought or effort required to find oneself mindlessly playing fireman games. It would appear the authors intended to imply some greater good, but the list is a curious mix at best? Zuckerberg and Cheney on this list? Really?

Insufficient depth among non-US based thinkers on your list

I understand this is a US website and magazine. However as you claim to be global and many people reading this website are global I find your list to be too US focused. Many universities and nations worldwide have great thinkers, yet most thinkers mentioned in your list are at US universities or Americans. Your non-US thinkers are sometimes too obvious, not very original. Your researchers clearly have more access as to what is happening within the US. I found the US thinkers who made your list to be more interesting as you were able to go deeper and go for the non-obvious.

Global Thinkers?

Anna Hazare is somewhere in this list. His real name is Kisan Babu Hazare. He is considered as a born again Mahatma Gandhi, thanks to Indian media. Born in a little village, Ralegan Siddhi, Kisan could not complete his formal education, as there were no high schools in a walking distance.

Too poor to travel. Too simpleton to think to live in a town closest to his village. Ended up as a small time vendor in Bombay. Sold flowers, illegally, at Dadar railway platform for number of years. Found a job as a driver, which only education helped him join the army, not as a recruit, only as a driver (civilian). Applied for an early retirement out of his bond for fifteen years.

Came home to his village and found out that there was too much illegal activities, including making home made hooch and young kids, having no formal education like him engaging in various criminal enterprise. Dried them up and became a village hero.

The latest name and fame came from heading a crusade against, of all the things, corruption in the government.

He is a most corrupt person himself. His earlier escapades in this genre included his patented, Gandhi style, "Fast unto Death," shenanigans. Mostly against Maharashtra ministers of Congress party. However, he did not care for the party affiliations and harassed a right wing Shiv Sena administration too.

Congress party, the party which rules the Delhi, found him amenable to clever suggestions. That includes tons of money funneled to his various (dummy) charitable trusts. The total could reach as much as Rs 5000,000,000 $1.00 = Rs 50.) approx.

His colleagues, total five, have been found corrupt and one is being charged with serious crimes. The other has been found in arrears over his income tax payments. Two more members were found obtaining residential plots in a very ritzy suburb of new Delhi, namely, NOIDA as a payment towards defending a most corrupt chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati.

How come he is listed as a "Thinker?"

Commendable effort.

It's not really easy to write an article of this scope and hope to get in everything that is supposed to be here, while managing to successfully drop out the "inconsequential" stuff. I'm from India, for example, so I can only be a bit certain of the Indian personalities. Not so much about the others.

Being an Indian, I can say Arundhati Roy may not be the top Indian thinker that you think she is. There are hundreds who have done the same work as her, and have been much more successful at it. For instance, there is Aruna Roy, a woman credited with the crafting of the RTI law which has simply changed everything in India, and some would say that she laid the foundations for Mr. Hazare's campaign success. There is Shoma Chaudhary, the editor of Tehelka magazine which is probably the best investigative journalism magazine in this country.

Well... those are 2 people who I can easily identify as "top thinkers" more deserving to be on this list than Ms. Roy. But a great and informative article nonetheless.

Shehbaaz, I agree with the spirit of your critique, but there is one glaring problem with your view. When you write "It shows the decline of the standards of US intellectuals in every matter...", I have to ask you, how does a nation with a paucity of intellectual rigor decline? That would put US intellectual capacity in negative territory. But then, as Mark Twain once commented, "what you need to get by in America is the perfect combination of ignorance and arrogance." GOOD LIST OVERALL, BUT OMISSIONS AND DOUBTFUL CHOICES

I am extremely happy that FP has, in its list : (1) Pervez Hoodbhoy (2) Mohammed El Erian; (3) Paul Krugman; (3) Daniel Kahneman; (4) Joseph Stiglitz, among others. The list, including the most notable ones such as El Baradei, Ghannouchi, Bill and Melinda Gates, Arundhati Roy, Al Wei Wei and others os very good. I am, however, disappointed that Brooksley Born, Chairperson of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission who, very early on, courageously took on the infamous "Committee to Save the World" trio -- Alan Greenspan, Robert Rubin and Larry Summers -- over the threat that the poorly-understood "derivatives" financial products could pose to the financial system, was not included in the list of most influential Economists. I am also mildly disappointed that the Turkish "Islamist" reformist,, Fethullah Gulen, was not included in the list. I am elated that Samantha Power is in the list, and am not sure about Ocampo.. The choice of Dick Cheney and a couple of other unsavoury characters, while justified in terms of influence, does violence to the generally optimistic tenor of the article. i wish there were more shakers and movers of Climate Science and action plan in the list.

Saudi Women

I stated in an blog about Saudi women with the title: "Saudi Women: The Fight To Be Counted" that they will lead the changes in Saudi Arabia due to their intellect, education, personality, and suffering.Saudi women had been on the side of Arab history because of the religious and social patriarchy. It is time to honor and recognize the Saudi women because when they achieve the change and gain their freedom the whole Arab system will be change and we will see the end of all forms of discrimination and dehumanization of Arab and Muslim women, and a revival of true Islam not the distorted religions of Sunni and Shia. My article text..

{{Since the start of the Arab Revolutions, and the blowing winds of change sweeping the Arab World, I was certain that a new history is being written by the Arabs which will establish a new world ,and have its effects globally.

My belief rests in that this new generation of Arabs is a sophisticated, determined, and unique quality that had stepped out of a marginal fraction to become a cardinal number. The new Arabs have proved so far that nothing will stop them from achieving their freedom, dignity, and rights.

It is certain that unjust forces will work to derail and block the winds of freedom from blowing toward them, whether by cosmetic measures, grouping and regrouping, bribing their citizens, or uncovering their true despotic nature of patriarchy, authoritarianism, and criminality.

However, one component of this generation which had been uncounted for and extremely marginalized to the point of non-existence, are the Arab women. They had been enslaved for centuries by religious patriarch, which in turn dehumanized them through social patriarchy, and then discounted them as a zero number in political patriarchy. This has been most evident case in Sunni Saudi patriarchy, and Shi’a Iranian patriarchy.

Although, in Iran patriarchy system women may had enjoyed some sort of recognition and freedom on and off, in Saudi patriarchy system women never had the recognition and freedom they deserve as human beings.

Saudi women had advanced their minds and intellect to new limits, in order to be recognized, and asserted their self esteem and confidence. They expanded their knowledge and thoughts, and developed quietly and steadily their intellectual maturity more than their Saudi men counterparts, in order to prepare themselves at the right moment to demand their rights and fight for their recognition.

They are proving everyday that they will lead the coming change in their society. And they will be remembered in the near future as the women who stepped out unexpectedly from the darkness to the light, when no one knew they even existed. The Saudi torch of freedom will be led by the Saudi women, and Saudi men must be prepared to follow their lead, and not step in the Saudi women path, and their fight to be counted as the Cardinal number for Saudi change. }}

It is unbelievable that you would not include Fethullah Gulen in this list. You included local politicians and activists who barely have any effect worldwide and skip such a scholar and activist who has mobilized millions of people to open schools, universities, charities, hospitals and promote interfaith/intercultural dialoge all over the world? He and his teachings have been recognized thorough dozens of conferences held in most prestigious universities in US, Europe and other parts of the world, dozens of books have been published focusing his movement. Gulen Movement is recognized for the transformation of Turkey as much as Tayyip Erdogan. And yet you would ignore him? It is a shame on behalf of your magazine!!! Should there be a conflict or terror for FP to recognize somebody from Islamic world?

According to the majority mindset within Egypt, it is definitely a good thing to see the end of the Mubarak regime. Unfortunately, one has to wonder, with all the current chaos and uncertainty if someone just as bad or worse will fill the void. Hopefully, the countries success in ousting Mubarak will serve as a safeguard against possible future tyrants and instill the truth of how the power lies within the people. 30 Second Smile

Why do you say so?

I have just watched an old Egyptian movie and was amazed how the country changed over 60 years of Army rule since Nasser.

Over the last 30 years of Mubarak, the educaion system, the economy, the cultural values, the international political status have deteriorated so dramatically taking with it the dignity and honor of the people who created civilisation 7000 years ago.

What these people are doing is to resurrect the honor and dignity and human rights of Egypt. They are rebulding its future and paying with their blood and their eyesight.

It is the army that is preventing them from acheiving their goals. They want to maintain their hold on the country and its economy. They rule and the people are enslaved and corruption is to the helt.

That is how Egypt was and that how it should not be.We should pay to restore our humanity back.

Arundhati Suzanne Roy, The goddess of Big Lies

The inclusion of Suzanne Roy who is Christian in a list of 'thinkers' primarily because she is a critic of Hindu nationalism is in the tradition of western, Christian imperialism. India and Hindus suffered under the hands of Christian rulers, be it the Portuguese or the British. Their history was that of racism, subjugation, genocide and looting.

Jewish nationalism is okay, so is Christian, Islamic nationalism. Any chance that the US will get a non-Christian president?

India is where Hinduism originated; it is an open and universal unlike any religion or Semitic origin. It is opposed to conversion. What exactly is wrong with Hindu nationalism?

Perhaps FP should do more research into candidates. Suzanne Roy has written false claims of the Indian government and army in the past. She is merely a rabble rouser who basically wants publicity. She is a fraud. A review is available here by Johan Dolan:

http://indianrealist.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/the-goddess-of-big-lies/

Even the Booker prize has been shown to be given to anti-Hindu writers who all happen to be Christian. Doing the work the colonialists could not do. An overview of the Booker prizes anti-Hindu agenda is available here:

http://literaryfalcon.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/brown-parrot-in-the-rooster-coop/

These authors to which Ms Roy belongs to is are called "Macaulay's Children" is used to refer to people born of Indian ancestry who adopt Western culture as a lifestyle, or display attitudes influenced by colonisers. It is used as a pejorative term, and the connotation is one of disloyalty to one's country and one's heritage. This frame of mind or attitude is also referred to as Macaulayism.

The passage to which the term refers is from his Minute on Indian Education, delivered in 1835. It reads:

“ It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of the people. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect."

your article on : "The FP Top 100 Global Thinkers"

To Mr Lionel Bonaventure @ Foreign Policy ; regarding your article on : "The FP Top 100 Global Thinkers" and your interview of Mr R. Ghannouchi -
11-29-2011
------------------------------------------------------------
While Mr Ghannouchi pragmatizes by answering that "he continuously defends the right of women and men to choose their own lifestyle in the name of Islam"... and other rubbish talk ; it is my deep regret to inform you that, at this very moment in Tunis - where I am based - ; university members of Tunis suburbs in Manouba - professors, students and rector - are held hostage since yesterday by a group of salafists allegedly shadow soldiers and armed wing of Ennahdha party.
The group is precisely leading this action to impose Islamic laws and codes on campuses cross the country (gender separation in classrooms, wearing of the veil etc..)
Rather than working to reconcile Islam and democracy (a questionable assumption given the facts taking place here), Mr Ghannouchi is training to talk out of both sides of his mouth and fool all of us , becoming a pass-master at playing a double game and therefore his credibility is shot.
Kind regards,
A. Leda

Bernard Henri Lévi is the father-in-law of the guy who made a baby boy to Carla Bruni. At the time the now French First Lady had an affair with the dad of Bernard Henri Lévi's son-in-law, a philosopher whose use is to confuse the mind of French people. Those riots had nothing to do with austerity, and everything to do with a load of scum who had grown up without any sense whatsoever of social responsibility or ownership, thinking it would be funny/exciting to wreck private property, fight the police and destroy London's heritage.

As a Clapham resident, we know what we witnessed. You need to amend this glaring error.

Far too many...

Center-left ideologues, spouting rote answers to questions they are ill-prepared for. This highlights my main issue with FP's features - they tend to focus on interventionist posturing, particularly on non-foreign matters. This list is the sort of thing I'd imagine coming from 70-year old foreign policy hipster fanboys.

Points for mentioning Ron Paul, but for chrissakes, could you people stop calling him an isolationist? Libertarian foreign policy revolves mainly around unfettered free trade and arms-length-at-most alliances - isolationists advocate something quite different. I'd argue that the Democratic and Republican Parties, and most of FP's commentators, advocate for a considerably more "isolationist" foreign policy regime, and their "engagement" and "power projection" are driven far more in the name of aggrandizing the US at the expense of the world than a libertarian foreign policy ever could.

The few other profiles of right or center-right thinkers are rather grey and muted, while the leftists and center-leftists are lauded.

I'm very interested with The FP Top 100 Global Thinkers list, first I was wondering if Condoleezza Rice is on the list. Back to her policy when Condi was still in Bush administration, I don't really like the fact that she miss leaded almost all of us with the Iraq issue. We know it is the biggest mistake ever made when Bush decide to spend US tax just to take Iraq down. Perhaps they’re interested with the oil reserves, take Saddam down, change the local government, and rebuild the cities. There are too many stakes and conspiracies involves. Instead of spending too much time with the war, why they don’t try to improve and fix the immigrationlaw, while many peoples in country like Mexico are still struggle with their living and try to cross the border illegally.

This is a good list of the top thinkers. Maybe everybody has their own perspectives but nevertheless this is one on a kind list and it is very useful to review what each of those included has done for the good of us other people.

Bad experience with paid publicity on Facebook

Im so angry with Mark Zuckerberg, for me, he is not a thinker, I am a user of facebook, I visit every day this network for my family, I saw one of his ads on his advertising that he offers on facebook and I decided to try...
Bad experience...
I have a company of invitacionesparaimprimir I filled all the requirements to have the advertising service, in the first week, I was shocked when I saw the charge to my card, check my account statistics and charged me for things very different what I ordered and paid.

I asked to review what happened and I have 34 days with no response from Facebook.
I think that facebook was a good idea as a social network, Mark Zuckerberg, you have to think a lot about how to treat people who pay for your service.

Zuckerberg?

I would have to 50/50 agree with yankeesdaily.

"Mark "Zuckerberg" thinks? or does he steal?" I believe he has a brilliant mind, and often times brilliant minds spot opportunities; and borrow ideas, or even steal them. So while I do believe he has a brilliant mind, the idea was stolen, which provides him with zero credit on being creative, at least for the initial idea.

Obama's constant use of a teleprompter makes me wonder if he needs to check into
rehab
or he uses a teleprompter for everything he does. "Pass the sugar, please." "Oh yes, I would like to have toast with my coffee this morning, dot dot dot, and maybe a banana as well."

I thought the list was inspiring

As a person of color I found the list personally inspiring. The choices were obviously considered for their wide variety of viewpoints and cultural background. It is important to remember that the culture in which one is operating plays a major role in their effectiveness and some change is not obvious or immediately evident. As owner of a Custom wedding and celebration cake bakery in Philadelphia I have faced challenges that are unique to my situation. This list shows that regardless of your situation consistency and passion will triumph.

Quality of life, which increased thanks to the Internet, may be in fact destructive to GPD: people watch films on Netflix instead of going to the cinemas, they use Wikipedia instead of buying dictionaries or chat on Facebook instead of meeting offline in cafes.

Thinkers or influencers?

Interesting list. Some really good picks and some that must have been meant as jokes. Boris Johnson will be the gravedigger or Britain, as he is not intellectually sound enough to step outside his ideological shoes and look further than the next London and UK election. And well spotted that German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is probably nearly as influential as Angela Merkel.

I am also not sure about the title, as many of those listed (and I have to admit that even though I think of myself as quite well-informed, I probably did not know about half of them. Don't tell that to the students who want to learn about political from me) are rather influencers or implementers than thinkers.

It would be great to have a list of people who are actually challenging conventional wisdom by being able to step outside the daily power games that politicians and business leaders have to play.

Still, very intriguing list, thanks!
Best wishes,
Dirk

Popularity contest

This is nothing more than a popularity contest and the majority of these people get the press, which is what gives them the chance to be seen as top thinkers...the people behind the scenes are the ones that deserve the credit...This list reminds me of middle school when I used to have to learn how to get rid of a hickey, but whatever works for foreing policy to get more readers. This is completely subjective, and think the list was arbitrarily put together by a collection agency so it has no merit with me or anyone that knows how to think for themselves.

The types of thinkers that FP thinks are important

Too few scientists, too many economists. There is a problem, either FP thinks scientists are of no consequence and economists are, or FP is completely ignorant of how science is transforming the world. Unfortunately, I suspect the latter. FP needs to talk to scientists, and read some science before ignoring science and scientists. Your world runs because of science, even if you ignore and the people who invent it.
Some of the thinkers chosen are good, quite a lot mediocre and a few stunningly strange. David Cameron & Boris Johnson? To compare either to amny of the other thinkers presently in here is quite peculiar.

Need Real Global List

Sorry I come out with this opinion and comment. This site claim to be global and many people reading this website are global I find your list to be too US focused.

I like to think about good inkzen and karma, where you should include all global leaders.

This list of top 100 global thinkers is truly amazing for me because i didn't knew most of them before this. One thing that i observe that there is no Steve Jobs in this list. I think the he is great thinker and a very innovative person of this century. Apple is one of the largest brands in the world. And the recently released iPhone 4S has break the record. All this is happened because of Steve Jobs thinking and his innovations.
He must be in this list instead of Barack OBAMA. Obama is a loser he don't deserve to be in this list. Well again so much grateful to u guys for the list

Extraordinary Thinkers

This is an excellent read! A lot of 'thought' went into compiling this list. .....Imagine culling it!

El Bradie is no Zuckerburg

I definitely wouldn't put Zuckerberg on it. Sure, Facebook is innovative, but it's just a yet another social network with people blabbing to each other for goodness sakes!!! It's not like they have a background check in physics.
