CAIRO: A sum of more than 6 million Egyptian pounds were stolen on Monday when a group of militants attacked an Amanco security vehicle carrying money in Helwan city, on the outskirts of Cairo.

The armed group shot at the car and its tires to stop the vehicle from fleeing the area. They then stole the money and fled the scene.

No injuries were reported.

An HSBC bank was also robbed on Monday and an unidentified amount of money was taken from its safe, the state-run al-Ahram newspaper reported.

The HSBC bank was in the fifth settlement right outside the capital, Cairo. A group of 7 militants reportedly attacked the bank in the morning hours.

Eyewitnesses said they fled the scene in a black Jeep after the robbery, which only took 10 minutes. The vehicle was then found abandoned in New Cairo close to the desert.

The 7 men began their attack by firing randomly into the air, but no serious injuries have been reported.

The bank’s camera caught the attackers on surveillance cameras and it showed they were dressed in traditional Bedouin dress and turbans.

A security source said that the investigation is under way to catch both groups of robbers shortly.
