Army Football to Leave Conference USA After 2004 Season

The United States Military Academy at West Point announced today its intention to withdraw the Army football program from Conference USA at the end of the 2004 season and to pursue a schedule as an independent.

“We are not surprised, as we have had ongoing discussions with the United States Military Academy regarding the future of its football program and Conference USA,” said C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. “We have the greatest respect for the Academy, its leadership and we know this decision was not an easy one for them. We look forward to completing the next two years with Army as a member in the sport of football and wish them well in the future.”

Army joined Conference USA as a single-sport member on March 10, 1997 and began football competition in the 1998 season. Army is the only single-sport member in C-USA.
