A Message from Dean Chester Gillis

I recently had a conversation with an administrator from another university who said that when visiting Georgetown he noted there was a national figure giving a lecture on campus that day. I told him “that is every day at Georgetown.” It is no exaggeration to say that there are simply not enough hours in a day to take in all of the events on this campus. Here are just a few of the recent accomplishments of our students and faculty.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams are back on the hardwood (and as of this writing both in the top 25); the weather has been mild all fall; the campus is alive with multiple events every day; first year students will return from the holidays to familiar surroundings; we all look forward to a productive spring semester.

The fall semester saw Georgetown’s ethics bowl team, which included three College students, win the regional competition and in March will be one of four teams competing for the national title. Art professor Sharon Moody's solo exhibit of oil on panel works, "Contemporary Trompe L'oeil" takes place at the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery (37 West 57 Street, New York, NY 10019) between December 8, 2011 - January 15, 2012. Biology professor Anne Rosenwald received an award from the BEN Scholars Program to promote the use of digital library resources and student-centered teaching and learning on the undergraduate level. Robert Lawton, S.J., former Dean of Georgetown College, has returned to campus as the Director of Catholic Studies. In Dahlgren Chapel, the Georgetown community bid farewell to Edward Bodnar, S. J., longtime Professor of Classics who died at the age of 91. In January the departments of History and East Asian Languages and Cultures welcome Antoni Ucerler, S.J., professor at Oxford University, as a visiting professor. Of U.S. institutions, Georgetown’s Government Department ranked fourth (behind Harvard, Berkeley, and Columbia) for programs that contributed the greatest number of papers to the field of political science & public administration over a recent five-year period. In March Professor Heidi Byrnes of the Department of German will be the keynote speaker at the TESOL International Convention in Philadelphia.

Georgetown is alive and exciting, with something for everyone. If you’re a prospective student, visit and see for yourself. If you’re a current student, take in all that you can without sacrificing study time.

Hoya Saxa,

Chester Gillis
