Hunter Gatherers - Mesolithic Period (Middle Stone Age) - 8000 BC to 4000 BC

The first people to leave traces of their existence on the Isle of Man arrived during the Mesolithic period, after the Island had separated from the English coast about 8000 BC. Small, nomadic family groups lived in campsites, hunting wild game, fishing the rivers and coastal waters and gathering plant foods.

The climate was warmer than today and the dense woodland that covered most of the Island sheltered deer, wild boar and smaller animals. Wildfowl inhabited the wetlands and the coast was rich in birds, fish and other marine life. The natural resources of the land and sea provided people with a varied diet and the raw materials for fuel, shelter, clothing, tools, as well as domestic and hunting equipment.
