Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski visits Benghazi

2011.05.12
Yesterday, 11 May 2011, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski paid a visit to Benghazi, the seat of the Libyan Interim Transitional National Council--recognized by the European Union and a vast majority of the international community as the right partner for political contacts in Libya.

This has been the first visit to Libya paid by a foreign minister of a Member State of the Libya Contact Group since the outbreak of the conflict in that country. The decision to visit Benghazi was taken in cooperation with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and NATO allies on the eve of Poland’s takeover of the Presidency of the EU Council. The visit is the expression of political support for a vision of Libya’s future proposed by the Libyan Council, envisaging the formation of a modern, democratic state and society.

During the visit, Poland provided its medical aid transport for those who sustained injuries during the clashes in Misrata and other Libyan cities.

The visit’s programme sew Foreign Minister Sikorski’s talks with representatives of the Interim Transitional National Council, including its chief Mustafa Abdul Jalil, as well as a visit to one of the local hospitals.
