On 22 May 2012, Poland’s Prime Minister appointed Mr. Piotr Serafin as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Plenipotentiary of the Prime Minister for the coordination of the Prime Minister’s participation in European Council meetings. Minister Serafin will be responsible for European affairs, including negotiations on the post-2014 EU financial perspective.
On 25 May, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski met with the President of the European Court of Human Rights Sir Nicolas Bratza.
On 24 May 2012, Minister Radosław Sikorski met with Wess Mitchell, President of the Washington-based Center for European Policy Analysis, currently on a visit to Poland.
On 25 May 2012, Secretary of State Piotr Serafin will take part in a meeting of Visegrad Group ministers for European affairs, which will be devoted to negotiations on the EU Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-2020. During the meeting, the Czech, Polish, Slovakian and Hungarian ministers will sum up the current state of negotiations and outline joint measures to be implemented in the near future.
In recognition of her achievements in developing the Polish-Romanian strategic partnership, MFA Undersecretary of State Grażyna Bernatowicz received, on 24 May, the Romanian Order of Diplomatic Merit, 2nd class, in the rank of Commander. The ceremony to honour Minister Bernatowicz was held at the Romanian ambassador’s residence in Warsaw.
On 20-21 May 2012 Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski is taking part in the meeting of heads of state and government of NATO countries. The summit is being held in Chicago. The Polish delegation is headed by President Bronisław Komorowski.
Mikołaj Dowgielewicz, the former MFA Secretary of State for European Affairs and Economic Policy, received the Władysław Grabski Award given to public officials who have made a major contribution to the development of entrepreneurship. The awarding committee presented the prize in recognition of the professional and very good – in the opinion of the international community - preparation of Poland’s Presidency of the European Union Council.
At the invitation of the British presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, MFA Undersecretary of State Grażyna Bernatowicz will take part in the 122nd session of the Committee of Ministers, held in Strasbourg on 23 May 2012.
On 17 May, Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski delivered a lecture entitled “The Chicago Summit: NATO – What Next after Afghanistan?” The event was hosted by the Polish Institute of International Affairs.
Chiefs of 16 Polish diplomatic missions held a regional meeting in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, chaired by MFA Undersecretary of State Jerzy Pomianowski and the Director of the MFA’s Department of Africa and the Middle East Adam Kułach, primarily to discuss developments after the “Arab Spring”. They also discussed bilateral political, economic and cultural relations.
