Amnesty Granted to 2,470 Prisoners on Independence Day

On the 56th anniversary of Tunisia’s Independence Day – March 20, 2012 – general amnesty was granted to 2,470 Tunisian prisoners.

Yesterday, Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki signed the amnesty agreement, after a committee, headed by Minister of Justice Noureddine Bhiri, presented a list of the detainees that met the necessary qualifications for release.

According to Chokri Nafti, press attaché of the Ministry of Justice, amnesty was prioritized for elderly, disabled, underage, and female prisoners. “On Tunisia’s Independence Day, amnesty was granted to a number of prisoners, and the sentences of others were reduced,” he said.

Kamel Eddine Hassan, assistant to the general prosecutor of the Ministry of Justice, specified that only 621 prisoners were granted full amnesty, while 870 prisoners received conditional amnesty.
